Depends what model you're thinking about. The 4.2 (mk2) is permanent, from what I remember of the one I had

you get high 30's on a combined cycle. My current 4.3 (mk3) which you can read about the drive system in other

recent threads, but basically at about 26 MPH it it switches to FWD only to save fuel, gets average of 40+ MPG on

combined cycle. If you stick to 60-65 on a long motorway run you can get over 50 MPG.

edit, for a good explanation on what models have what drive have a read at this thread -

My RAV4 D4D Permanent 4x4 returns about 40 - 45 mpg (all this slow snow road driving makes it better....   )

Get better mpg than my last Renault car I had (shhhhhhhhhush though keep that last bit quite though)

Just to clarify, it is 4WD on demand. Although as Dave says the manually selected 4WD will drop out at about 25mph, if you accelerate above that speed the 4WD will automatically engage seemlessly and variably depending on how hard you press.

However, mine does around 40mpg knocking around and as long as I don't go much above 70, it will do towards 50mpg on a trip.
