Avensis Engine In A Carina

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Anyone ever put an avensis engine in a carina. I have a crashed 1.6 98 avensis and a carina e estate with a knackered engine. both are the 4AFE engines and I always assumed it would be a direct swap.Well thanks to a frozen rad and a faulty temp gauge it's on the cards but I was told by someone that it's not worth doing. Anyone out there see a problem or anyone got step by step instructions, you'll have a friend for life,

technical it should be a straight swap as they are both 4A-FE, some ancillaries may need swapping over though. try just using the long block (head block etc ) and use the Carina injectors and manifolds

not sure whether I'll get away with just the head, the problem is oil keeps getting into foul the plugs so I'm assuming the valve seals or head gasket is brown bread. Today's D-day so I'll post later on the result, The fact that I know nothing about engines is a bit of a handicap but thanks dawesy for replying anyway

sorry i was talking about swapping the whole engine less manifolds and injectors.

This engine gearbox etc should be a straight swop. You might need to change engine mounts

The 4A-FE engine came in some different versions. The two most common versions are

The non lean-burn version that has some more power.

The lean-burn version.

There was also some different versions on the heads too. The differences on the head is the ports for inlet and exhaustgases.

The best advice I can give you is that the engine block will be a rather easy swap and you should keep the original cyl head that will fit to the 2 manifolds and mount it to the "new" engine block. You should also bring the ECU with you. There could be some new sensors that was not in the old ECU.

But is it worth all that job? Isn't it better to change the whole car instead? Only You can answer those questions.
