Oil Leak From Filter Housing

Hi all

As the title says I have a slight oil leak from what looks like the oil filter, where it mates to the filter housing, The filter is screwed on tightly.

I think its either the filter has split slightly, the seal has broke, or the oil is actually coming from somewhere ontop of the filter and dripping down. Its does look like its coming from the filter thou. It was changed last Febuary 09 by myself, was ok until recently, could the cold weather have anything to do with it?

Has anyone had any similar oil leaks?. The filter was not a genuine Toyota one. :o

Anchornman do you have any pdf`s of the oil system, I just want to know what`s above the oil filter housing, just incase its leaking from the actual housing.

I'll have a look in a bit and I've also got those diff photos from my 4.3. I'll be back!

Jedi

These are the best pdfs I have on the oil filter

oil_block.pdf

oil_filter.pdf

I don't know if they will help but if you end up fitting a new filter be sure to oil the rubber ring or it can twist and leak. Use a mirror to look above the filter to see if it is coming from above.

Now going back to your questions about the 4.3 rear axle...............

............this is the fully sealed multi plate clutch housing for the 4WD - no filler;

This is the level plug on the drivers side of the diff;

filler.jpg

and this is the drain plug on the passenger side;

..........all dead easy.

I have heard before about none genuine oil filters not being 'fit for purpose'! :o With the small amount of money that would be saved by using a none genuine filter (if that is your problem)... then I personally would not risk it. I read somewhere about a vehicle that lost its engine oil with a leaking none genuine filter... and the engine was wrecked! :o :(

Thanks anchornman for those pdf`s,

The multi clutch housing on the newer Rav`s looks very compact and small, are there any electrical connection to it?

Daveh: Yes your probably right, I only bought non genuine items as I was buying parts for another car, and they just happened to stock filters for the Rav, so I`d though I`d kill 2 birds with 1 stone, Its comming up to a year now since its last oil change so will replace with a genuine item this time.

The coupling has a plug which attaches from the back on the driver side;

drive_connector.pdf

Its quite an interesting device and you can read more here;

rear_coupling.pdf

It looks easy to change - just the prop off and undo the 4 bolts while the diff is installed. Hopefully, we'll never know!!!

I have heard before about none genuine oil filters not being 'fit for purpose'!

20 odd years ago, as part of a training programme, I was shown some counterfeit parts, that had been bought over the counter. There was a cartridge oil filter example that was full of cotton wool!

You may be right,

When I 1st changed the filter nearly a year ago, the replacement(non Toyota) did feel very light when compared to the Genuine one, I just thought it was because there was oil still in the one I took out? It also looked different inside, ie less gubbins inside, But I had bought it so i put it on, its been ok up till now it was one of these

Anyway I have now bought an Origonal Toyota one which does feel a lot heavier, and has definatly got more gubbins inside, more filters/washes etc.

So a lesson learnt I think.

I never used to have a problem with non genuine parts before, but must admit recently the quality of so called OEM equivatent quality parts has gone right down hill. I think I will stay away for them from now on.

Also seen these They are approved by most Manufactures inc Toyota, only downside is there is not much difference in price.

They do a good deal on oil and filter. Here

Frankly I think that the genuine ones will be Crosland or Fram or Coopers or AC Delco or similar. I just get a branded one and have never had any problems.

Just my opinion!
