Definitive 2.2 D4d Head Gasket Stance By Toyota

Just bought an 05 2.2 D4D Avensis with 71000 miles had it for 2 weeks and already it in for the head gasket.

On speaking to the Toyota Dealer they are going to repair the issue but he informed me that it has been repaired at 60000 miles just over a year ago.

Given this have Toyota resolved the issue? or in another 12000 miles will I have to Stump up the cost of yet another Head Gasket.

If this is the case I'm afraid that I'll be saying good bye Toyota!

Beware I work in a department with three of the eight vehicles being Avensis 2.2td all three Avensis have required new head gaskets one car was written off as the damage to the engine was classed as too severe to warrant reconstruction.

It now transpire that toyota have agreed with the warranty company to replace the engine with a new one.

Result for me not so sure if they have resolved the issue or are just covering their asses to I can drive for another 60000 miles before it goes again. I'll let you know in 3 years or so!

Hi everyone I have a 56 plate avensis t180 with 92000 which has a distinct lack of power above 2500 rpm. Ok below that bevause I had egr valve replaced it was clogged up that bad. I have had the head gasket replaced twice by toyota under their extended warranty thing. The second time it was done I had the gasket, head, pistons, injectors and Some other stuff replaced. It has no power above 2500 rpm and cannot keep ip with a fiesta! No joke. It never used to be like that. Can anyone help at all thanks

Hi mate, this is a different subject from the original post but I would take it back into Toyota as you should get warranty on the work done for 12 months.

However, and bear with me as I am not a mechanical person, so this is what has been told to me, the clutch is covered in oil as a result of the pressure problems brought on by the gasket. My dealer wants to replace the clutch, instead of just cleaning it (the latter being recommended by Toyota head office it seems). No charge for labour as they have to do the work on the gasket anyway, but approx £250 for the clutch.

As the clutch is only covered in oil as a result of the gasket problem, shouldn't this also be picked up by Toyota? Whilst the official Toyota stance is to clean the clutch and put it back, my dealer states that their policy is to recommend a new clutch as a safer option (and argue that I would probably be due a new one in another 30,000 miles anyway).

I would appreciate people's comments on this (and apologise in advance if I've placed this in the wrong thread).

once a clutch drive plate gets oil on it it cant be successively cleansd as is with brake pads/shoes.

the pressure can be cleaned ok cos its all metal.

replacing a head gasket does not involve touching the clutch so why they said there is no labour charge for doing the clutch.unless they remove the engine to do the gasket.

for all other out of warranty conditions related to AD engine problems where the customer complaint can be directly linked to a "carbon clogging" concern ie. egr valve DPNR, 5th injector egr cooler, blocked manifold etc, we would accept this as being linked to a oil consumption condition.

Well the last time I looked the good will extended warranty was 112k or 7 years. All repairs are covered by a years warranty! I know this as when I had my 2nd engine I wrote to Toyota UK and they confirmed this in a letter! So if some people are having problems Toyota should be sorting this out provinding that the 1 year has not ended regardless if this there 1st.2nd.3rd rebuild!!!...

Does anybody have an update on Toyota's latest position on the 7 year Warranty?

Is it still valid?

I have a Sept 2007 2.2 D4D and when it was MOT'd yesterday I was told the Head Gasket was going.

I took my D4D TX3 in for a service yesterday and was told that the head gasket had gone and new engine needed. The car is a 2007 model with 88k on the clock and FSH.

The only problem i had noticed was occasional recent overheating which i cured with coolant top up - or so i thought. I have written to Toyota to see if this will be covered by warranty and will post their reply. The car drives beautifully still so it's hard to accept that i might need to trade it in as i really like this car.

I am wondering of there is any reason i can't continue to drive it as long as i have a liter or so of coolant in the boot ? what will eventually go wrong ?

as long as its under 7 years or 111k and has been service at the correct time/distance then the toyota dealer will put a claim in and hopefully you should get a new engine

My 2.2 D4D TR Manual hatchback @142k miles has started loosing coolant for the last couple of months (about 2.5ltrs so far). No other funny symptoms, still everything works fine. Bought it at 7123 miles October 2008 and it has never, ever, gone wrong. Previously never lost coolant (still original coolant!). Comfortable, bland, car I am very happy with.

Mr T have just serviced it (fine, good job): I told them about coolant leak: They said there were signs of an old leak round the water pump but now stopped.. and fixing head gasket if it was that is beyond value of car. (Which I accept, given Mr T prices). I understood/understand it is beyond the warranty replacement limit - and that the leak only started at 138k+

I plan to run the beast until it dies anyway, whatever happens, hoping it carries on for a year or so but, if the head gasket does go, are there any alternatives - can anyone suggest a specialist Toyota independent who might do a reliable but economic job?? My local independent is OK for basic servicing but not I fear for this job..

Looks like I'm joining the knackered Toyota club. I have a Toyota Auris T180. 2007 model with only 64K miles on it. Noticed it overheating on and off and found it had no water in. When I top it up, the water is gone after a days driving on and off.

Put it into the local garage and he says trade it in, its knackered - Head Gasket for sure.

At a minimum I'm being told there will be no change of a grand and that will only go up considerably if the Head is cracked too (which I'm told is quite likely).

I only bought a Toyota due to its great reputation of reliability yet this one hasn't lasted long. Only 64000 miles and its a write off?

I have no Toyota Warranty (bought the car second hand) so I'm pretty goosed I sense :(

These don't fail instantly - there will have been signs over a period which it seems that you missed. Did the garage sniff test it to confirm head gasket & not e.g. a water pump leak?

The goodwill warranty is for 7 years/112k miles whichever comes first so your car is outside of that on age.

Oh heck, I looks like my car fits this bill 2.2 corolla verso bought it from a garage 5 days ago!!! Dealer has told me to "write him a letter" before we can agree to me returning the car ( 57 plate T3 2.2 D-4D 74K with service history). I have been driving Toyota for 11 years but this is my first ( an probably last) diesel.

My 2008 T3-X has decided to start chucking coolant all over the engine after being looked after well.

I've just spent the morning at work taking bits off to see what's involved in removing the engine.I am a hgv mechanic by trade and have access to a full workshop but still don't fancy this job.

I think it will be a case of ditching the thing to cut my losses, which is a shame as I love the car, but it will probably end up as my first and last Toyota.
