Hi all & Happy New year

Still having truoble with the B***ch of a RAV

2001 2.0i petrol 1AZ-FE VVTi engine.

Does anybody know if this engine has any anti-knocking device, such as sensor ?

The ticking noise we are getting can't be valves clipping I did 30 mile road test yesterday & i'm pretty such it would have bent the valves. It sounds more like the old days when you could actually !Removed! the engine by turning the distributor a fraction in either direction.

Yes, almost certainly. It should be in the front of the block.
