New Uk Member With Mkiii Turbo

Hi Guys

New to the forums with just a few questions and introduction!

I'm based in the UK and have just bought myself a sweet 1989 Supra Turbo MKIII in Silver for a mere £1k. Pictures to follow when I take some.

I have just sold my Mitsubishi 3000GT Twin Turbo because I had an offer I couldn't refuse and bought the Supra as a run around until I decide what to go for next. Decided on a Supra because I've had 2 MKIII NAs before which were both 100% reliable and I like big motors.

So, about the car ...

The exterior is pretty tidy, and the interior is a dogs breakfast (going in for a full valet next week - ex smokers car ... ugh). As for the brakes and suspension they are totally stuffed and will need replacing! Anyway, the reason I bought the car was for the engine!!

It is running quite a substantial number of mods and the ex-owner reckoned it was pushing over 450hp and had clocked 11.9s in the 1/4 mile. Having run my own 3000GT down the strip more than 25 times at Santa Pod (gotta be the slowest sea-level uphill track in europe) I managed to clock 14.1s and 99mph so I know how quick 11.9s is.

I'll list the main mods the previous owner told me about below:-

- Hybrid turbo - 62mm steel turbines with twin oil seals

- HKS 2mm gasket with ARP bolts @ 160Nm

- TurboXS BOV

- Straight through 4" mongoose exhaust

- 550cc injectors

- Cold Iridium Plugs

- Lexus AFR

- something about a Reg Reimer conversion???

- ECU remapped

- Blitz DSBC running between 12psi and 23psi (11.9s run)

The things that worry me:-

Knock ... in my old 3000GT I would get knock if the boost was raised to just under 1 bar. But I have been reading these posts with interest and it seems the Supra has some kind of built in knock sensor. What does this do and is it protecting my engine from detination?

Cooling ... how good is the stock intercooler ... and should it reall ybe upgraded to be maximising the potential of the other mods?

Fuel ... when does my baby start to run out of fuel ... its running a std pump, but he gave me a brand new uprated Walbro pump which wasn't installed yet and said I needed to get and AFC if I wanted to install that.

How do I know when the limits of the stock engine are being reached?

For example, on the 3000GT its easy

... stock parts only run up to 13.9psi (otherwise bang)

... stock engine internals are good for 700hp

... stock MAF (AFM) is only good for 450hp - which is limit for normal upgrades.

When the engine is cold and is first started or on idle, it runs quite rough (up and down and can stall) ... my guess is because both injectors and AFM have been replaced and the ECU isn't quite accurate with its assessment of the situation. Also it is running cold plugs.

I've only had the car 2 days, but I've managed to source some OEM replacement Struts and Brake Discs and Brake Pads all round for the cheap total of £310 ... is that reasonable?

Any help guidance and advice appreciated! Especially with whether the figures are reality or whether the guy was bull****ting me!

Nice to meet you all and I'm sure I'll have some fun here - seems like a good forum!

P.S. Sulley is the nickname my 3000GT had ... the blue monster... lol

Hiya, I'm still digesting all that, but the power figure is rubbish and so is the 1/4 mile time im afraid.

I'll be back in a bit once I've got threw it all a bit more.

Nice choice on car though :thumbsup:

LOL ... sure thing!

I know its a quick car ... but 450hp is a hell of a lot!! My 3000GT was pushing 320hp through 4 wheels and that took off like a rocket ... but I have to admit this car does feel substantially quicker! I'm curious to get to know more about it, get it dyno'd and then once I'm happy with the setup ... see what it can really do for myself! Never trust anyone else I say!!

Having said that, I did find a timing slip from Santa Pod in the bunch of papers he gave me for 14.0s @ 103mph before he had the Turbo upgraded and the AFM and 550cc injectors installed.

Curious to know how this baby's gonna turn out! :)

Get my new suspension and brakes on monday/tuesday ... woopeee ... cos its !Removed! dangerous at the moment! Also, the progressive springs on the car are partially compressed already (all the upper rings are together) which is not good as it bottoms out all the time. What springs do you guys recommend for a firm ride but still comfortable and lowered about 1.5"??

Cheers

André

OK, firstly,

The supra has 2 knock sensors, but there is great debate wether the ECU listens to them while under WOT, but yes they do listen to knock under normal conditions and alters timing accordingly.

Stock internals, they say stock internals are good for up to 400-500 bhp, but obviously your putting alot more strain on aging parts.

The stock IC, is rated to about 400bhp, but it suffer quite a pressure drop so really needs binning ASAP, remember cooler the charge air the better.

Remapped ECU...........this isnt available for the MKIII,any performance chips they fit are just fuel cut defenders, which yours must be as its running higher than 12 psi.

Fuel pump, if that was me I wouldnt be running at 22 psi, especially if the set up hasnt been tested with a wideband O2 kit, I doubt the stock pump is barely coping and will probably die on it at them levels, which wont be a good thing.

The reg reimer mod is just a different air screw for the lexus AFM to help with the idle.

Hope this helps.

NWS is right.. the figuresthe seller gave you are wrong, and the idea of running 23 psi on 550's and stock IC is crazy. Don't turn the boost up too much ...
