Blowing Bulbs

Hello folks,

Wonder if anyone can come up with some ideas for the fairly recent problem ive had with my avensis (T3-X - 2004 auto)

Probably around 2 or 3 months ago, both headlamp bulbs went, after about 10months on a set of Phillips high powered bulbs (sorry, cant recall which ones exactly)

So i popped down to local garage and had a couple of standard bulbs wacked in, whilst i pondered spending another £20-30 on another set of high powered ones (as we all know the standard light output is meagre at best on standard bulbs) I have yet to buy another expensive set, for reasons you will see now...

Since then, they have been lasting on average about 2 weeks per bulb. I only use the headlights after sunset or before sunrise, or in severe weather like heavy rain etc, so i dont drive around all the time with them on, in the daytime. Having been back to the garage on several occasions to get them replaced, their electrical chap replaced the connectors for each bulb with new ones as he said they were not in the best of condition. (blackened and generally worn out)

So new connectors before Xmas, new bulbs and away i go. They still blow after about 2 weeks. I keep taking it back, and he has since hooked it up to a voltmeter to check the power going through the connectors, bulbs etc, all is in order, no spikes or anything.

Yet they keep going kaput. This afternoon i had yet another one replaced.

As you can see, i am not quite prepared to splash £30 on another set of Phillips or Osram etc. The electrical chap is confused as to what could be causing this, and reckons if they go again, Im going to have to leave the car with them for a day and he will then go about re wiring each headlamp up to its own relay (!?lost me!)

Any pointers? Any ideas on what we might look for?

Thanks in advance

Mike

this is the best idea for solving the problem (a friend o'mine has 2008 megane sedan, he'd had same problem - it's a well known problem with megane-and solved it in this way).

Have you checked the charging voltage? Possible overcharge could be burning them out prematurely, also, do not touch the glass of a halogen bulb (you probably know this anyway) as you will leave greasy deposits on the glass (quartz) which again can cause premature failure.

Hi,

I have similar problem. I'm replacing front bulbs every 3-6months and can't understand why... I'm beeing cautious - not touching them with fingers etc, but they still burn out. (mine avensis is '01 d-4d 2.0)

Sound like its time to convert to hid with what you are spending on bulbs you can find kits available online mine is a 35watt kit fitted with 6000k bulbs gives a crisp white light never had to use mains since ive had them. mine were fitted 12 months ago and no replacement bulbs. I work in the dark nearly all the time and this has been an excellant solution to the crappy toyota lights.
