Noise When Reversing

Hi guys,

Looking for some advise. My auris is running great, except when i move it backwards... When i reverse the car (esp. in very cold weather or up a gradient) i get a crunching noise, which i think is coming from drivers side underneath the car. If i move backwards with the cluch only half up or on a even surface it's OK. Would like to know if there is a know issue, recall or is it just me.. Wouldn't like to think that the reverse gear is slipping with under 20K on the clock. Cheers.

Hi,

I have heard that noise is due to dirt getting in to rear brakes. Especially with wet/snow weather. Toyota cleans it and sometimes put some modifications.

Thanks. I guess i should clarify it's not the classic gear grinding noise one would associate with a bad gear change... it is more an abrasive rubbing / grating noise. What kind of modifications do they make. My brakes do squeal from time to time but i just put that down to dust.

I have read about it on other European Toyota forum. It seems to be quite common problem with current weather as snow and mud getting into brakes. There is a squeaky/ grating noise when reversing or turning. Some people say that cleaning is enough but some say they had new brake yokes (?) fitted. I am taking my Auris for a check tomorrow.

I tried some extended reversing in the car park at lunch time. I found that irrispective of speed if i hold the clutch down there is no noise. Yet, when i lift the clutch fully to engage the reverse gear there is a noise. This was on a flat even surface.

I have left my car for check today. They have to replace steering column.

Will that be under the warranty... i'm a little surprised at the number of warranty claims mentioned on this forum. I hope that my visit to the garage will be covered, the last thing i need is to be fobbed off or wrongly charged.

Yes, they checked it and after that confirmed new steering column is required and it will be warranty job. I didn't even ask the question.

Well in my case they have been doing great job but I am bit worried now what when my warranty expires. I have 10 months left and time to decide if I want to keep my Auris. I don't think so.
