Engine Management Light

Hi i have had my toyota evensis since almost 1 year now.. drives very well just 1 problem. engine management light is on, have had it diagnosed and reads code P0500 VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR MALFUNCTION.. taken it to afew garages and they hav said its the lambda sensor 1 place even said its the crankshaft sensor so i was like wtfffffff.. these guys dnt know what they doing.. can some1 help pls...

According to diagnostics for the Avensis this code is caused by one of the following faults.

Open or short in speed sensor circuit

Speed sensor

Combination meter

ECM

Skid control ECU.

Hopefully its a simple case of replacing the speed sensors. Sensors have a habit of going bad from time.

P0500, definitely vehicle speed indicator malfunction. Trouble with code readers is that they only point you in the general direction of the fault in many cases. Unless your using top-end diagnostics equipment or you have up to-date "Auto-Data" disc with wiring diagrams you will struggle to find fault, you may be lucky & have broken wire from sensor unit. Sorry, but sometimes you have to pay MR-T or quality independent.

thnx for the replies guys.. but am experiencing something really weird... my engine management light was left on for mayb over 6 months cos i didnt get the problem resolved just left it how it was because mechanically sounds n drives perfect.. the management light now went off itself a few days ago n then came back on after afew hours.. and now its gone off. it comes on when put ignition on but when i start the car goes out like the other lights..

are u having any issues with speedo

over reading

or being jerky

no the speedo is fine not having any problems with the car seems really weird everythings working jus as normal.. no electric problem n mechanically very good.. then whys the management light on.. well its off now but has been on for over maybe 6 months n only recently went off for afew hours den back on it done this afew times n now it jus seems to b off as normal.. strange

speed sensor has 2 functions one is to show speed to driver the other informs engine management ecu using a reader you should see vehicle speed displayed as engine sees it some non toyota readers can not do this
