Rear Window Rattle

Hi Guys,

Ok before I start I know this is nothing major but boy is it bugging me. I have a 2008 2.0 D4D TR avensis with 45k miles on the clock had it from new.

Over the past six months a rattle is coming from the rear window area of the car. Its a saloon so the shelf in the rear window is fixed. It a cracking type of rattle its doing my head in, I normally turn up the radio but now I know i got to find the problem. If your talking to someone in the rear seat it gets really annoying.

I have tried the following with no joy:

1 - Removed the rear mounted break light from the window.

2 - The interior side panel where the air bags are.

3 - Removed everything from the boot. ( I know its not coming from the boot as I even lay in the boot with someone driving i know its coming from above me.

Could it be the rear window seals? or should I take the rear shelf out completely any one know how id do that?

I hope someone has had a similar problem?

Hi,

It could be the safety belts which feed through the package board that are vibrating.

If the sound originates from higher up, maybe parts of the wire harness in the roof headlining or the pillars have become loose.

The package board isn't "fixed". (nothing is... :) )

The board is attached with 4 clips behind the back seat rest.

If your model has a rear window wiper, the motor/wiring may be a source.

Less likely but not impossible is, that the window glass itself has not been installed properly with insufficient clearance from the metal body work.

Hope this helps, good luck.

Mine started in mid summer last year so i dont think it related to the cold weather. It seems like such a small thing but to be honest Id rather have a wheel bearing go it wouldnt be as annoying.

Dont really feel i can go back to the dealer with such a matter, id feel so silly. Will take the shelf out when i get a chance.

I´ve had the same problem with my 2001 avensis saloon. Not sure if it applies on the later models though.

Well, in fact two problems.

If it is a rubber to glass type of sound it could be the rubber sealing around the window.

If it is a very crisp type of sound (like cats claws on glass) it could be the mounting holders for the rear window scraping against the glass. These are used for proper alignment when the glass is fitted to the car, and doesn't do any good later on. There should be two of them, located on the upper corners of the window.

  • 4 weeks later...

still no joy on this one...

I took the rear window self out like i said i was going to left it sitting in the back seat but the rattle is still there.

Checked the rear belt fittings no joy.

Its very hard to pin point it.... think i'll now take the roof lining down a bit at the back? is this hard to do?

This is really doing my nut at this stage.
