Help Please - Issue Replacing Drive Belt

Guys - hope you don't mind me posting here for my Avensis Verso, but you share the same D4D engine and seem most active forum for issues with it.

My issue is I'm trying to replace the drive belt, I've loosened the tensioner pully by turning the adjuster screw, however it doesnt turn far before getting quite tight. Am I right in thinking I need to actually loosen the tensioner pully - assuming it clamps to the adjuster bracket ? If so, is this clockwise/anticlockwise to loosen, and how do you get easy access to it, as for the avensis verso at least both the power steering pipes and SRS airbag sensor are right in the way?

Any help gratefully received,

Tim.

Which belt are you after changing Tim?

It's the top power steering belt. I'm pretty sure I need to loosen the nut on the tensioner pully, I think I'll need a swan neck spanner to do so though, as there isn't room for a socket, and as the nut on the pully is recessed, a flat spanner is no use.

I hadn't seen until trying to replace this belt that there is also a lower belt driving the alternator (although I should have realised), it looks like that belt needs to be accessed from underneath.

The belt arrangement is much the same as on this picture. The belt I'm trying to change is the one going from crank to front. The tensionser is the 2nd pulley from the top. I'll also have to change the rear drive belt also, as I think they are originals and have seen 80k miles of use and the ribs seem very cracked.

This might help. Follow the instructions for the 1AZ-FE engine. The tool shown is a serpentine belt tool like this;

I finally managed to replace the belt, thanks to anchorman and especially 'in_the_no' who pm'ed me the exact details.

I've also subsequently managed to locate this pdf, which shows exactly the steps to remove the power steering and alternator belts - hopefully attached here for future reference.
