Out of interest what has the computerised readout on the dash been saying all this time?

well, the readout is usually on that fluctuating readout and shows anything from 12-99mpg, depending on how and where the car's being driven. as for the actual solid, cumulative reading that takes an average, when i bought it, the reading was close to 38mpg: but that's because it was driven about 200 miles from place of purchase.since there, it's just been going down - about 33.5 or something last time i checked

Your MAF may be dirty and in need of a clean. You'll find it just after the air filter and it should be attached with two screws to the pipe. When its out you'll see a bit with a hole and beside it, a little blob of plastic with two wires connecting it to the sensor body. If this is covered with dirt it will give a false temp reading to the ecu. Clean it GENTLY with some electrical spray and a cotton bud. Dont force it or bend the wires much. A maf sensor is 100+ quid.

Re-install the sensor, taking care to not drop the screws into the engine bay. I've done this and had to remove the bracket holding the filter to the engine to get the screw back. Much cursing.

Re: the creaking clutch. Mine does that too. I keep meaning to locate where its happening but i never get around to it.

Also, if you havent done so already, check the gearbox oil level. It may be low. I put 75W80 into mine and it shifted much better afterwards, especially when cold. Mileage went up too but only by a few mpg. Which is fine by me!

thanks for that

did sort of have a go at the maf but couldn't be sure i found it - there's just a boxy thing with a mass of pipes etc after the air filter housing. will have another crack sometime this week, maybe - a photo or diagram (if there's one readily available) would be greatly helpful and appreciated.

will also get the mech to check gearbox oil, now that you mention it - occasional whine/groan *seems* to come from gbox but nothing i can be either too specific about in terms of location/source, or establishing pattern (random noise syndrome!)

the squeak - mech suggested i chnage some nylon bushes around the clutch pedal asembly; will endeavour to get it done soon with the other stuff...

thanks again

interesting...

just got off the phone with mech about the maf thing and he says mine doesn't have one - has a kind of electronic thing or something which can't be cleaned. might explain why i couldn't seem to find it -

and there's more

just spoke with toyota parts feller - rel nice feller he was, too - huddersfield toyota - and he tells me it does have a maf and also cofirmed the dirty element thesis

think i have a slightly better idea of where it is now and will have a look see myself again

he also said that sometimes the vvti sprokcet gets stuck and that can result in heavier fuel use but that fault is usually alongside hesitancy

could be an end in sight

thanks again

How prone are the petrol Yarissseses to getting injector clog?

I tend to drive my diesel one around at barely above idle most of the time, and found it was loosing 'pull' over time, and consequently needed use the accelerator more to make it go, which obviously affected the mpg.

Apparently my low-rev driving was allowing crud to build up on the injectors, so now I stretch it now and then, and drop a tank of V-Power in every now and then and it seems to help.

I apologise for hi-jacking this thread.,

Cykers comment above "it was losing pull over time" is exactly how my 2005 D4D yaris with 35,000 miles on the clock has been performing for the last month or so. I had it checked out (Friday last week) by a local tuning specialist. He carried out a fault code read and found no faults. He then cleaned out the Air Mass meter and did a road test and claimed that the car was performing as it should and could'nt fault the vehicle and charged me £35.25; although in fairness he did say that he would have liked to have compared it to another D4D.

Driving the car afterwards i do'nt know if its psychological or not but it did feel a bit better but not as i remember it when i first had it 20,000 miles ago (before you ask yes the car has been serviced as per schedule requirements and had the EGR valve cleaned).

The above comments by Cyker about injector clog and his methods to overcome it seem to be worth a try.

Does anyone else with a D4D have the same issues and maybe sorted the problem out?
