Anyone out there got a high mileage petrol Avensis? I'm going to be taking my 55 plate up from 50k by 35k per annum over the next couple of years and would like to know if it will take it...

Hi Nick, if you have looked after the car with regular servicing and steady driving and continue to do so I don't see any problem, just keep an eye on the oil & water levels once a week along with the regular servicing. These engines can run to a very high mileage under normal circumstances and I think you would have had a problem by now if there was one. Regards and good luck ..... Pete.

The 2.0 VVTi is stronger than the 1.8 VVTi, they don't have the oil burning problem just keep an eye on the head-gasket.

Hi James/Nick, I forgot about the head gasket fault but this fault was due to the cylinder block not being drilled deep enough to accommodate the length of the head bolts on some engines, so when the head was torqued down they were being torqued against the bottom of the threaded hole in the block and not compressing the gasket correctly. I'm not 100% on this but I would have thought in Nicks case 50k miles, it would have gone by now, what is your view on this James?

Regards Pete.

Thank's for the info guys. The current 50k is mainly motorways miles at 70mph and with regular Mr T services I have had no problems...

We did a head gasket on a 2003 avensis 2.0vvt-i about a year ago, it had covered just short of 60k, when we got the head back from skimming we found that the holes in the block where not drilled deep enough, we contacted a local toyota dealer, and they cliamed they had not heard of any other cases and are's was a unique case.

It will be unlucky if any major issues arise, i bet there are plenty of taxi's (no offence) knocking about that have circa 200k+ on the clock. At 120k it will be nicely bedded in for its 2nd life ;)

Hi Steve, well my local Toyota dealership are certainly well aware of the problem, maybe your dealer had not experienced this fault personally as is it quite rare. Any car can blow the head gasket but if they had searched the Toyota database or at least made further enquiries they may have found out that the head bolt/block problem does exist.

I will certainly agree with cabcurtains with his views as the 2litre petrol is a good engine.

Pete.

Hi pete this is the same toyota dealer who managed to replace a engine in my old corolla due to oil consumption 1 month later the engine blew up (They over torqued a pulley). They replaced my injectors due to injector rattle in my t180 only for the car to break down next day. So i've no faith at all in william a lewis shrewsbury.

Has i had heard about a few 2.0 vvt-i engines with this issue i would of thought a main dealer would of.

I must agree on the whole the 2.0 vvt-i engine is a good solid engine.

My 2.0vvti petrol has covered 85k. I've had it from 39k and so far no faults with the engine other than an o2 sensor that flagged a fault in the ecu.

I cover 18k/year.
