got 2nd hand sensor as described and engine light off!

But I am noticing that the fuel economy is the same as when i had the engine light issue.

When all was good I was having between 450 and 500(on a good day) miles from top to toe in the tank indicator.

now(and when the issue appeared) I am struggling to get 400!

I tried to reset the ecu with OCB 2 but car is not compliant!

any ideas???

thanks

sean

Hi Sean,

Just pull the EFI fuse for about a minute. This will clear any faults stored and put the car in 'learning mode'. Then drive the car at different engine speeds where the roads allow, so that the car 'learns' map settings.

Another factor is the condition of your secondhand sensor. It could be giving a different signal, but lets try the learning mode first.

Let us know how you get on.

Konrad

took out the large square fuse (EFI on the circuit map but noticed that there are two fuses) with car turned off for about a minute and notice the fuel guage going from almost full to 3/4 in the space of a few minutes then back to where it was, weird or what!

do i need to take out the actual fuse also(blue 10amp i think)?

thanks

john

Just to be clear, the EFI fuse is located in the engine compartment fuse box. It is a small blue blade type rated at 15 amp. The location is shown in the fuse box diagram on the cover. My handbook shows it 3rd column from the left, 4th from the top. It is close to a trio of relays.

When you mentioned 'large square fuse', to me you seem described a relay.

I hope this helps.

Hi konrad!

took out the 15amp EFI fuse and no difference

still roughly getting only 400 +/- miles per fill!

Exhaust smoking a wee bit more than normally also

any ideas?

thanks

John,

From what you are saying about the economy and the exhaust smoking, something must be amiss. When the EFI fuse is pulled, it goes to basic settings and needs to learn a new map. That means driving slow and fast, accelerating up to high rpm. Do this where speed limits permit, and for about 5 miles. I read some where (could be the Haynes manual) that if the car still runs rough, then it may need to go to a Toyota dealer or specialist to have map uploaded through the diagnostics.

One point. I have noticed is you say that you still only get 400 mile per fill, yet you pulled the fuse 5 days before. You must use the car a lot!

If the engine has had an oil and filter change and a new air filter, that should help.

Spark plugs and HT leads okay? These are some of the basics.

Petrol. What brand do you use? I have noticed that I get the EML with Asda petrol once in a while, but Shell is fine plus my range seems to have gone up.

Driving conditions. Have you checked the tyre pressures?

I have mentioned most of the simple and cheap things to look at before you think of the expensive solutions.

The smoking exhaust may point to another problem. The engine could be in need of a overhaul - high mileage? The fuelling could be wrong. You did get a second hand sensor. That could be the problem!

The EFI is not learning or has a problem! That means back to the diagnostics.

As the experts say, without seeing the car, it is hard to say what is wrong with it.

Someone may have a better idea.

Good luck.

Hello there...

Ive owned my 2001 avensis SR 1.8vvti for 3 months now and the day i bought the car the engine light came on...on the way home...had it diagnosed...found out it was one of the o2 sensors...got the light cancelled...and it stayed off for a couple of months...and then came on again one day...so i just pulled the EFI fuse and kept driving as normal! It is very frustrating because i do get poor fuel economy but cant afford to replace the sensor...also i've been told you replace 1 sensor and then shortly after the rest go...NIGHTMARE! I aint looking forward to my mot test in September 2010! See what happens! If i can emntion i find on my car the light tends to come on as soon as i hit about 40mph...strange!
