I have recently acquired a Mk1 that has a fuel guage that shows half full with full tank and then eventually goes for a 100 or so miles with the fuel-out lamp lit. Obviously the sender and/or guage are working, though not properly. Can I get the fuel guage float and sender unit out of the fuel tank without removing the tank. The Haynes manual isn't too clear on this as in the text it says the tank must be removed, but then shows a photo showing the top of the tank with wire connectors and what look like mounting screws when viewed from inside the car. I'd like to test the sender and guage to see whether the problem is electrical or physical ie will a bending of the float arm cure the problem.

Any help in this matter will be greatly appreciated.
