Idle Revs Depedant On Fan

I'm a proud (new) owner of a 2004 Avensis D-4D ... and so far enjoying being a new member of the Toyota world :toast: .

I noticed something odd though and wanted to see if it is normal.

When the car is running, with the internal fan running (air con turned off) ... when I pull upto traffic lights, the revs drop to about 800, then after a few second rise to about 1200rpm. If I turn the fan off, the revs drop back down to 800.

Is this normal, if so why?

If it isn't, any thoughts to a problem??

Yes perfectly normal warmup procedure on the diesels. When the engine reaches full operating temperature it will drop to 800 regardless of the Fan. You'll also notice that it will only rise to 1200 when the vehicle is stationary this is to stop the car picking up excess speed when crawling in traffic for example.

While warming up, you will also find that theidling revs also depend on the outside temperature/engine temperature and your inside temperature setting. Interesting to note if your engine is warming up and you are idling, if your temp is set at say 22 deg with the engine reving at 1200 rpm - if you drop the temp to 19 degrees your revs will drop to around 800 rpm
