Choosing Alloys For The Rav. Check This Out..

Whilst trying to choose a set of rims for the Rav I found this.

Hi,

Trawling the threads do not see anybody has replaced their rims (yet) to get rid of runflats -unless I've missed it- wondered what you intend to do about the TPMS warning light system?

I assume if the original rims are replaced that will trigger this?

I am still undecided about the dreaded RFTs, dealers will not remove them and replace with normal tyres (my preferred choice) but I am not over zealous about having to notify changes to vehicle to insurance companies-unquestionable would have to be done, but up to now that puts me off doing anything other than sticking with the originals.

Hi,

Bought Anchormans 17" rims and tyres, sooo much better ride quality, prob don't look as good, but at least I now can buy my tyres anywhere. Purchased a Toyota puncture kit and inflator, I know not as good as a spare but will have to do for the time being.

I am looking for a suitable space saver.

Interestingly removing the RF's has not caused the warning light to come on the dashboard-luckily it has stayed off.

Regards

I nearly bought Anchorman's 17s about a month or so ago, but decided to stick with 18s. Just swapped my wheels today, for 18" Team Dynamics Rimfire's :D

Now need to get a repair kit. How much did you pay for the Toyota one?

Also, interesting to here about the TPMS? How long have the old wheels been off? I've only driven from the wheel shop, and had the old wheels in the back, so thought that the system was still detecting them, and hence no warning light.

Basically all thanks to Anchorman, he spotted a genuine one on E Bay- and I ended up paying only £26 for it, rang Toyota and the part is either £104 plus VAT for a pre 2008 or £128 if post 08. Have bought some Tyre weld as an additional back up.

We (royal we-meaning Anchorman) first tried unplugging the sockets under the dash, but that turned the RF warning light on the dash.

We thought the same, re the wheels being detected as had one of the old wheels in the boot, until my E Bay purchase arrived. Have since driven about 70 miles with no wheel and to date fingers crossed -NO LIGHT ON THE DASH !

On my trip up North, to see Anchorman, he was kind enough to ask a friend (CRV owner)to see if his space saver fitted. 5 nuts/bolts align, but central spigot ring (is that right Don ?) on RAV is 3mm too small.

Regards

Chris

Very interesting, hope they stay off - would be interested to know. As I said tending towards sticking with the originals (done over 30k now and they still have quite a bit of tread) but as likely to keep the car longer this may become an option when they are ready to change.

Assume you have notified your insurers of rim/wheel change. If you have- have they increased your premium? (nice people that insurers are!)

Yes that is right Chris.

If anyone is using a CRV spacesaver take care that is a very dangerous situation because although it fits nicely, it is 3mm too big for the hub which imposes the load on the studs and may cause them to shear off. If you have one and need to use it you might be better to keep it to 30mph *MAX* (difficult on a motorway) only as far as you need to get you off a carraigeway. I see people driving normally with those things on and that would be recipe for disaster. Better still - get rid of it!

You will see in the "sticking throttle" thread I have asked TGB to meet with some of us over this RFT issue.

Good point the insurance, had assumed as replacing with Toyota wheels would be like for like.

Well I spoke with them this morning and apparently 'if within manufacturers specification and does not effect the performance of the vehicle' then no change. Got the operator to document my call though.

No doubt if I had a claim they would probably try and argue it though !
