Cigerrette And Aux Power Sockets

MY problem is this.

2008 d4d tourer TR

Front cigarette socket and aux passenger socket in centre console.

I plugged an inverter in the front socket and it worked for about half an hour and then stopped working, I thought that the fuse had blown so plugged in the rear socket and again the same thing happened after half an hour. Thinking that again it was just a fuse i waited unitl i was home to replace said fuses.

Checked fuses which had not blown and using a multi meter have checked that there was power to both sockets.

Front:

Power to socket as when lighter depressed light comes on but dooes not heat up, when the driving lights are turned on the power goes out completely and the circuit for the socket is dead.

Rear:

Plug in any device and no power is available, took console apart to test cables and when earth to meter and socket shows power in one cable!!

Asked toyota they said change the fuses which I did as a matter of course just in case they where u/s

Asked if there was a relay on the circuit in case that was u/s, they said no. I have since seen an electrical diagram of a power and cigarette socket circcuit and there seems to be a relay.

Where is the relay located in the car?

Has any one else come across this problem?

And how can I correct it?

Am I missing something?

hope that someone can help

cheers

  • 1 year later...

Thought I'd reply (18 months later) as I'm trying to get the cig lighter on a '98 GS TD working again.

Like your case, there's power going to lighter and a replacment lighter socket works ok but it's too big to fit in fascia so thought I'd try to repair original one. Continuity testing showed there was a break in the negative side of socket. Turns out there's a small electrical component like a resistor or something under a cover at the end of the socket and this has blown. I'd like to solder a replacement one in. Does anyone know what rating this component is or does it matter if I just short it out...

Thanks

Mark
