Heater Problem..blows Out Cold Air

Hi All

I have a bit of an issue with my Celica Gen 7

When the engine is nice and hot, the hot air comes in nicely through the vents, however when I'm at standstill for about a minute or two, it starts to blow cold air... so then when I put my foot down on the gas or give it a little, it instantly starts to blow out hot air again?

Some people have said its the heat matrix, where others have said its the thermostat! But i'm not too sure.. I've booked it in the garage on Thursday, however I wanted some advise before hand in case i get ripped off.

Please help???

THanks

Checking the thermostat would be my first check- it could be stuck open.:)

Hi..wow that was the fastest reply ever!!! Thanks.. however err how do i check that? sorry..

When revving it, I can hear the water behind the dash, dont know if that has anything to do with it... and also, the temp on the dash goes to normal (about half way up)

Thanks

To test a thermostat it needs to be removed and heated in a pot of heated water up to boiling point using a thermometer and noting its opening and closing temperatures.

But the sound of coolant moving in the dash could point to an air-lock in the system. It can also be the early signs of a leaking head gasket but a test of the coolant for chemical contamination for combustion gases should reveal if that is the case. Most decent garages will have suitable test equipment for checking this aspect.:)

Hi again...

I checked the coolant and there was nothing in there... It has been in the garage for past month as some dude smashed into it, so his insurance has fixed the car etc... however i've reported it back to them today and am taking it back in on thursday for full check up. I dont think they have topped up the coolant since replacing the radiator back!!

My last question is.. that since yesterday i have topped up the coolant, and since yesterday the temp gauge goes only quarter way up?? the car heats up as normal.. but i've left it on for a while and have taken it for a spin..usually it would take about 8-9 mins to warm up completely and the temp would be about half.. but now its only going a quarter way up??

any ideas???

Please??

Hi, im having similar trouble, but thats because i tried topping up the coolant. If you've done the same, then you've got an airlock and the radiator just needs bleeding...but for some reason, i get my friend to bleed it, its fine for a week or two and then becomes cold again!

Im having similar trouble too. My baby is in the garage at the minute and has been for 4 days now coz they cant find a solution :( Theyve, bled it (and got the air warm temporarily until a few miles down the road & goes cold again also the temp gauge flashes on "H"), theyve also changed the thermostat, checked the water pump, the radiator pressure cap and pressure tested the system but still cant figure it out. Ive been stuck in limbo for best part of a week now :(

Ive just started having the same problem. I thought it was the climate control rather than anything to do with the engine. It seems to work from cold but after you have stopped and started again it just blows cold. I thought perhaps a flap was getting stuck? It seems like this is becoming a problem. Cant afford to get it looked at yet, perhaps i'll make it through the summer first.

I ended up calling the dealer I bought it from because the garage it was in told me that "the bores had ovalled" (whatever that means) and they would basically be looking to fit a new engine!!! So I called the dealer I got it from and theyve taken it back to repair it (ive only had it 2 weeks so they should be forking out in my opinion) but if its gonna cost them too much theyre giving me my money back. If your having the same proble, (i.e after bleeding it properly it still isnt staying warm) my advice is to get it into a garage fast.

I can't see how an Airlock problem is related to the design fault with too few oil ways on your pre face lift 140 Engine Nick. But please keep us informed of developments at your supplying Dealer. I can't see them wanting to pay for a new Short Block, so I think they should offer you a full refund before putting the car through an auction so it becomes someone else's problem.

Well i had a peak earlier, and my coolant expansion tank seemed to be empty! waiting for it to cool down so in the morning il fill it up, bleed it and report tomorrow!

Edit: Sorted it!, filled up and bled the cooling system and it turned out that the heater matrix had a massive airlock, removed the hose drivers side (return), from the bulkhead, run the car at around 3k revs watching the coolant level and waited for the fuid to flow! then just stuck the hose on and the car heated up lovely as usual.

Edit again: Reason for airlock and lack of fluid is hole in radiator... problem found! solution on its way

As you've all said, sounds like an airlock.

Best way to get rid of an airlock is to have the car jacked up at the front, then top up the expansion tank, then with the expansion tank open(top removed) start the engine. Occasionally rev the engine, but main thing to do is get under the car and physically massage the radiator pipes on either side. It can take 30 mins or so but eventually you'll hear a gurgling and the expansion tank will empty.

Repeat the process till the system is full.

Its a right pain in the *****, but trust me, its the only way to do it, i've done it loads of times and it does work.

Hope that helps

Mine turned out to be the bottom water gallery on the radiator was hanging off, so whenever the system had any pressure in it it would just blow coolant out, i replaced it and bled it in a simular way to what giler just mentioned and its perfect now

My radiator was leaking last year so i put in some radweld. It seemed to fix the problem until recently i lost the hot air and noticed the radiator leaking. Off to toyota and thats £400 for a new radiator fitted. I wasnt pleased but unfortunately theyve just rung today to say theres still no hot air in the car and they need a full day to take the heater matrix out and replace it. They think its blocked by the radweld. This comes to £1100 on top of the £400.

i just dont get it. apart from the fact i havent got £1500 i dont know what do with it. surely radweld shouldnt do that much damage or they wouldnt sell it. I thought i could try flushing it with radflush but dont know if this will help with a blockage.

I thought id just bring it home and live without heating for now but they said it might blow the head if the water isnt getting round. What a mess - i dont like my Celica today!!
