Rattles & Noises

hi folks

just today (this evening) started up rav at work to come home

but on pulling away in the car park,..a very harsh vibration from 'behind the engine' / under bulkhead area/ actually this almost went through the whole car....and a rattle when i release the clutch. :(

i also have gained a 'sports car exhaust sound from somewhere' as though its blowing, but exhaust looks in good condition though

and it doesnt make the exhaust noise when at standstill and just being revved

when i arrived safely home,i tried the clutch at standstill with handbrake fully on,..it bites well in 1st / reverse gear..not a sign of slippage, pulls back end down in 1st and front end down in reverse....it wants to go!!! :)

it doesnt smell either, like a burnt clutch normally does.

are there any 'shields' that may have worked loose,or any exhaust 'bits' i should be looking for

any thoughts gratefully received

Start it up and with an old cloth just cover the end of the exhaust to make a seal. It should build up pressure and blow your hand away. Other than that there are several shields starting at the manifold and working most of the way back. The only way really is to get underneath or call in an exhaust centre/garage.

When you say vibration do you mean it just rattles or a vibration you can feel through the car? You know where I'm going with this don't you?

Good luck.

hi anchorman

thanks for your ideas, trying the exhaust thing this evening.....

drove to work today and home again, didnt brake down(i was worried),but i think its more of a rattle, but its definatley there

i had noticed a rattle caused by 'resonance' from the engine at certain low rev ranges for a while now, which leads me to think it could be shields rattling around.

it seems to be coming from 'behind ' engine somwhere,....but i had a little experiment today....,i got to work (big football pitch sized car park)....stuck it in 1st,let clutch out,let it 'crawl' along on torque only,....but i then slowed it by applying the brakes a little, causeing the labouring 'resonance',a definate rattle from engine bay.

just out of curiousity,if it is DMF shouldnt i have trouble engaging gears / clutch etc ?,can it go wrong in a matter of days?

..............................

Right......just been outside with head torch on !,laid under rav on sheet of cardboard, seems the recent weather has done me a favour, lovely and clean under there, but nowt loose that i could see / feel and right up to under rear of the engine. :)

everything in its place..solid,there was one shield i couldnt get to though..i could see it from below but couldnt get to it..tucked up high behind the engine, but think i touched it from above instead, its below the turbo shield(i think)..all solid though,as it should be with a '52' reg vehicle. :)

re exhaust, put my hand over it with a cloth, blew my hand away as you said

i cant find anything, this is frustrating, but booked into colchester toyota on thurs pm now,see what they say :(

i am preparing myself for DMF but have none of the symtoms, apart from a severe rattle that happens with labouring resonance on gear change,on tick over or driving along....engine is as normal :)

got me baffled

Your problem does sound very similar to mine (see dreaded dmf post) , had a vibration and bit of a roar under acceleration for a couple of weeks which I thought was the exhaust, saturday started up and it sounded like a sack of spanners and suspected a bearing breaking up, took it down the road and the noise stopped but on idle you could still hear a knocking, rev it up and you hear the rattle when you throttle off.

Drives like a dog, diagnosis- DMF.

Hope for your sake it isn't, but from your symptoms it doesn't sound promising.

Good luck

Paul

hi paul

yep see your point, but i only get the rattle when engine is labouring / taking up drive....apart from that its normal,no rattle at all, just engine noises as usual.

gears all work, clutch bites well..no slippage, judders very slightly though come to think of it.

The DMF works by absorbing low frequency vibrations from the engine. The clutch can still work normally. I hope everything turns out OK.

hi folks

i was under engine bay at work today, just 'having a look',my rubber / plastic cowling that is attached to under side of bonnett air intake it very loose on its plastic clips, and does vibrate against the bonnett.

i can 'wiggle' it very easliy with my fingers through the holes in my bonnett vent.

so....a question, can i apply a bead of clear silicone between the cowling and the bonnett to stop it vibrating and rattling?

obviously the rubber consatena sleeve bit will still rest on the intercooler as i close the bonnett

apart from that the engine is running as normal, not a rattle from anywhere, does this mean my flywheel may be ok......

as rav is driving as normal now.....bizarre

you mentioned silicon - after a tip, I used it to seal connections on our generator exhaust pipes and it worked!!
