Precautions For Turning Off An Engine With Turbocharger

Is a 2.2 D-4D Verso a 'turbo Diesel'?

In the manual, it says after high speed driving (63mph or higher), the idling time should be 2 mins before turning off the engine.

I find it very strange after arriving work, I need to sit in the car for 2 mins before able to switch off the engine....

If I drive for half an hour at 70mph, then back to normal city road for a couple miles, do I still need to wait for 2 mins before switching off the engine?

been that way since I first started driving turbodiesel trucks back in the early 80s.

This may well be the case but it is not very often, if ever, that I have gone from straight from 60mph to parked and turned the engine off. In most cases your speed will have dropped below 60mph for at least 30 seconds before you have parked the car, put the handbrake on and turned off the ignition. Even driving into a motorway service area takes your speed down from 70mph to around 20mph for at least a minute.

The turbo in my D-4D doesn't spin up until about 1800 revs so if you have been driving at under 1800 revs for two minutes you are probably OK to turn off the engine.

It wil depend on how much time is spent driving the couple of miles on normal city roads before engine shut-down.:)

You probably don't need to wait that long; The only reason it says that is so that the oil cycling through the turbo has a chance to cool off, and will get plenty of time to do this if you've come off a motorway and have to queue in the off-ramp roundabout or whatever before driving along a normal road.

As long as you're not pushing it, the turbo and oil will be cooling to non-damaging levels during normal driving.

The most dangerous time is if you're on a country road; I had a friend who lives on one, and to get home it'd be literally 60mph, into driveway, engine off, until his turbo failed and his mechanic friend told him about giving the turbo time to cool down :)

I must admit I wish there was a light or something to tell me when it's 'hot' tho' ;)

Thank you everyone who gave advice. I normally drive for another 5 to 10 mins of city roads before arriving my work place or home after the 70mph journey. Looks like I don't need to sit there looks silly in the car park any more! Or at least I can reduce the idle time a minute.

How would I know my D-4D turbo has spun up / down? (hopefully not by hearing it ;) )

Yes you can hear it, or certainly a change in engine noise when it kicks in along with a sense of more engine power.

Most turbos when they spin up/down create a change in engine noise the most noticeable are things like Escort XR3i's and Subaru's. The Verso turbo is not quite in the same league but you can hear it.

Some examples from youtube

And if you want to know how fast your Verso could go...

And we all know how accurate the Verso's speedometer is, don't we? :D
