Engine Management Warning Light

Recommended Posts

Posted

I've heard a lot on this forum about faulty O2 sensors in the Carina, my engine management light comes on for maybe 5 mins in a typical one hour drive, sometimes not at all.

Is there any way I can find out if this is the O2 sensor or do I need to take this to a Toyota garage?

Thanks

Mark (1.8 E GS)

Yes, you can see yourself what´s getting the check engine light to get on.

Open the lid to the diagnostic box in the engine bay.

Put a jumpwire between E1 and TE1 terminals.

Turn the ignition key to on, don't start the engine.

If there is any fault codes the check engine light will flash the fault codes. The fault code for O2 sensor is 21. 2 flashes 1.5 sec unlit 1 flash 2.5 unlit and start again with the 2 flashes again or another faultcode if there are several stored in the memory.

If no fault codes are in the memory the light will flash continuosly.

To clear the fault codes pull the EFI fuse in the engine bay fuse box for at least 10 - 15 sec.
