Thanks James. I have reserved a service for tuesday. Thanks for all the help and info guys. The info on this forum was one reason , I stuck to a toyota again - This forum and also that my old avensis still runs strong.. my friend who drove my old car back from Birmingham to London , while I was driving the new one said, he had never driven something that smooth.

Good point George...this seems to me like the best car forum on the internet. Though maybe i haven't looked properly.

I am looking to run away from Toyota and go to Honda so i peeped into one of the forums i saw. Shockingly, i noticed someone asked a question since September last year (this happens to be the last post!) yet no answers. OR maybe Honda cars don't develop problems?

Hi Casey, have a peep on the Honda "Civic" forum, there are lots of tales of woe to read about, but just like this forum we (although not all on here) only get on here to moan most of the time because of the problems we have. Honda make a good car just like Toyota do but you may not get the same helpful response from Honda UK as you do from Toyota according to some Honda owners! At least Toyota seem to be willing to sort out design faults and with the recent bad press they may be even more willing to in an attempt to restore confidence and sales.

Regards Pete.

Hi

Having owned 9 Toyotas and 2 Hondas I know which I prefer.

Have had 2 Honda Civics from new - last one on a 04 plate - although reliable both produced excessive road noise in the car, and the 04 was very very 'jerky' to drive in slow-moving traffic (kangarooing?) which was the main reason I got shot of it.

Also dealer nowhere near Toyota standard. !st service on the 04 Civic = £155. 2nd service (20K), they quoted £155 again, or £170 if it needed new Wiper Blades. Collected the car later, presented with a bill for £264!! When I queried it, was told dearer than quote because it needed new Wiper Blades!!

I made a bit of a fuss, but all they would do was to knock off the price of the blades, I still had to fork out £240.

That dealership has now gone bust........

Hello All,

I just wanted to know what your opinion was on the 2.0 VVTI engines. I am planning to part exchange my current 1.6 4AFE for a 2006 2.0 VVTI automatic.. any ideas if it is a good idea...I know the high mileage might is a put off... any other suggestions for a replacement car...I dare not go near a 1.8 VVTI and the 1.6 VVTIs are hard to see...I do not wish to buy a car and then land up with clutch changes or engine short block replacements....The reason for the change is because my current car is a hopeless mess inside, the back seat keeps coming out of the lock into which it fits in and the paint on the back side has started peeling off..with a baby coming, I wish to get a car which is automatic, so that my wife can drive too... any thoughts welcome...

Hi just replying about your question about avensis 20 petrol auto have owned one for over 3 and half years bought it with 18000 miles now at present have 150000 miles i use it as a taxi and must say has served me well but at present it is useing 2 liters of oil every 2500 miles which enquireing with other friends their is problems with them burning oil which i think is to much for a car but has never let me down other problem i have is engine management light is on and and esc light comes on as well have heard the cars that were built in japan don't suffer from same oil problems heard reply from someone else they were suggesting camry good roomy car but big problem with camry is head bolts sheering which is a very expencive job to do hope this has helped you THANKS DUBLINTONY1

I personally wouldn't pay £4,300 for a 100k 2005 petrol.

Why are you saying 1.8's are no good? I don't get it.

Personally (and no offence)- If I was spending over 4k I wouldn't buy a 2.0l petrol car with an auto box. You'll spend a fortune in petrol over a year with the pump prices going up.

We had a brilliant little Aygo. We even drove through various countries on New Years to Germany one year in it. Alittle bit more would buy you a Aygo.

Or....do what I did. A reliable- full history, 1 owner 2001 Avensis 1.8 petrol and BANK the rest of the money for a rainy day. Our first son was born this week and I was tired of repairing my 2004 Subaru Forester monthly. We banked the difference.

Ps. Always phone round various taxi licencing office's with the reg number to check if it was ever registered as a Taxi. I did the same.

A lot of guys here complain about oil consumption in the 1.8 engine. Personally i would prefer the 2.0 because of the extra power. The 1.8 has roughly the same power as my present car, but lacks the torque. So, from my point of view it's a step backwards to go from a torquier 2.0 to a 1.8 with the same power, yet less torque in an heavier car.

But then again, i wouldn't buy an automatic.
