My Yairs, seized up today as I havent ticked the engine over in about a week, we also had some cold frosty nights during the week, so last week the engine Battery went flat, so then I got my uncles jump leads today and when we started it the left back wheel was completely locked out as he drove it back & forth about 6 times, then it eventually lossed up, I intitially thought it was the damn suspension but my uncle said it just seized up because It hadnt been driven in a while. does this sound like seizure in a car guys????????

cheers

Things like that happens. if it is wet and stand still for a while and then low temperature. There are lot of people that hardly never use their parking brakes because they are afraid of seized brakes.

It is very common for rear drum brakes to lock up after cold damp weather,it's indicative of excessive build up of brake dust in the drums so a quick clean and inspection is required.

I never pull the handbrake on hard in this weather. I'm lucky that our street is flat, so i can pull the handbrake on slightly and then leave the car in 1st gear.

It does seem to affect some cars more than others though.

I always thought leaving car in gear overnight does not make the little gears really good inside, constantly having full car's weight-pressure on them. Tell me if I'm wrong.

Any pressure on the gears whilst parked up is very little indeed and compared to the stress and pressures they undergo whilst in use ain't even worth thinking about.:)

In the interests of safety any unusual brake noise should be investigated and a few quid spent now on investigation would be money well spent.

Remember brakes are like your best friends - "You miss them most when they ain't around anymore":)

lol cheers will any garage sort my brakes out and would you know the cost rougly for an inspection

Such a question is like asking "how long is a bit of string". It will depend on which garage you go to so you would need to make some enquiries.:)

Cheap and good just don't make good partners but I ain't saying you should pay through the nose either.

What part of Belfast do you live in - a general area is sufficient.:)

You can purchase brake drum and shoe cleaner.... I remember using this years ago and it worked well, it can even be used on the friction surface of the shoes without compromising their effectiveness. I do not recall the brand but a decent high street motor factor will stock it. Remove the drums and spray everything clean and wait for it to dry before refitting. You might also want to use a clean paint brush to clear out any debris you see and wipe the friction surfaces with clean kitchen paper.

If everything is clean I hope this would clear your problems

I live in the East of the city. Sorry I can't think of any garages I could recommend on your side of town and I know of only one garage near me who specialises in Japanes cars. Have a look through Yellow pages for a garage baned "Japuro":)

I've seen plenty of garages making a basic check for free. Like brakes, suspension, steering alignment, fluids etc. They'll just put your car sky-high, put the 4 shoes off and up they go with a torch around.

They can tell you if you have problems inside these drums.

To check drum brakes correctly it is necessary to remove the drums for a proper examination. How on earth could anyone tell the condition of the drum, brake, cylinder or interior operating levers or if there were signs of a delaminating shoe lining from peeking in via a small inspection hole at the rear.

Even when checking disc brakes I always remove the pads so I can inspect the surface of the pads for contamination, glazing, delamination or signs of heat stress. Yeh it takes a longer but it can save sheds loads of money in the long run.:)
