I don't have a Starlet Turbo, but want to locate engine, gearbox and ECU to transplant into my Sera

Posted

does the sera share the same parts as the Starlet?

Posted

the engine mountings etc are in the same place I think, the Sera uses parts common to the Starlet and Paseo/Cynos. The standard Sera engine is the injected 5E-FHE 1496cc 16valve dohc unit.

Over to you Andrew (he's the expert:D)

Yes, the Starlet donated much of the suspension and floorpan. Engine is a 1500 version of the E series engine used in the Starlet and Paseo amongst others, but the 1300cc turbo version is the one to have.

because of the family resemblence, the engine mountings are identical and most of the wiring is there.

a starlet engine can be changed from a 1.3 to a 1.5 using the 5efhe engine.

the 5efhe engine is basically the starlets engine (4efte) minus the turbo, etc. making it a 4efhe. to get the extra cc toyota gave the pistons a longer stroke to make 1496cc.

you can take the bottom end from the 5efhe engine, swap the pistons for the 4efte ones (these are decompressed to handle the boost). and then put the 4efte head on to your 5efhe bottom end and you have a 5efte engine. it has been done by a few starlet owners, for more info check out some starlet websites.

whats a sera anyway?

The Sera is the pretty coupe body the Starlet Turbo should have come in :-)

Yes, it is possible to build a hybrid - 300bhp on normal fuel or 450bhp with Nitrous.

I just want a 4E-FTE engine.

I have a couple of 5E-FHE engines to sell if anyone needs one...

Posted

Will buy a Starlet Turbo in Japan, strip engine, gearbox & ECU and sell rest...

5E-FHE engine - no idea really!

if i was you i would keep the gt and sell the sera. the gt is a much better car imo. who is going to buy a gt with no engine, etc?

The Starlet better than the Sera - says the person who didn't know what a Sera was!

The Sera scores in both looks and rarity over the shopping hatch Starlet. Its only the engine that lets it down - but thats an easy swap. Why the Sera wasn't offered with this engine originally I don't know!

Lots of people would be interested in a Startlet without an engine - it would have a full interior, full set of glass, suspension, wiring etc - useful for spares.

by the looks of it the sera is more comman than the gt. i am the only person with a gt on this forum, how many seras are there on here?

i also know why the sera wasnt offered with the 4efte engine. it is because the sera was designed for mincers who cant handle the power of the gt. if my car is a shopping hatch your car was designed for !Removed! hairdressers.

i was wrong if i was you i would keep the sers.

whoa! lets not get into a 'my cars better than yours' type of slanging match!

EP82 you said said you didn't know what a Sera was and then say it's not as good as a Starlet GT, you have no grounds to say this, and sweeping personal generalisations about drivers of different cars show to all readers that you clearly don't know what you're talking about.

Both cars have their merits.

Be constructive and keep abusive comments to yourself or you'll find yourself edited.

There is no place for this childish behaviour on here. Please grow up! ;)

There are quite a number of Starlet GTs in the UK. Don't get me wrong - they are very potent cars disguised in a hatchback body. You can give a lot of cars a fright with one.

The Sera, was a very limited edition model, that looks like a sports car, and with uprated suspension, handles like one as well - but Toyota, for some reason, gave it the 1500 N/A engine rather than the 1300 turbocharged engine that they could just have easily fitted instead.

I have looked at numerous Starlet GT's over the past few years, so am reasonably familiar with them!

I don't want a "my cars better than your car" argument - both cars have their good and bad points.

I don't believe we have any hairdressers on the Sera mailing list!

£2K was too much? AHHA, whatever! As you can tell it was my car, and you having never seen the car means you cant really say if it was too much... I'd spent well in excess of £2K on the car along with hours and hours of my time making it into the little rocket ship it was.

Quartermile in 14.2 Seconds? Not slow, you have to agree (Escort Cosworths do it in 15 seconds, in stock trim?).

I miss the car, i miss upsetting GTiR Drivers, i miss the surprised face on the WRX driver and most of all i miss the sniped look on the Sierra Cosworth Drivers face when you stuck along side him...

It was a great car! If it came to a choice between a Sera and a Starlet, the Starlet would win, hands down.. Why? It wieghs lots less and is therefore quicker. A 4EFTE engined Sera wouldnt be very effective at all, due to the increased weight. Serious modifications would be needed to keep up with a standard EP82 Starlet GT..

Anyways, dont wanna start a war, its just my opinion. Insignificant at best.

Cheers

Hello Paz, I think know you from the SXOC where I post under the name Jeff :) ?

If so then I have read the specs on your car on the SXOC, I think in the 'For Sale' forum? Would have to agree £2k seemed a very reasonable price, I was breifly tempted myself :D

Take it easy - Jeff
