I seem to recall my Avensis had a three way switch : ON / DOOR / OFF. Check your switch doesn't have a central detent that you are flicking it past, which will be "door operate".

Big Kev.

Or the door switch which just earths the bulb is faulty, remove the door switch, take off the connector and put or link this wire to an unpainted bare metal or screw on the car bodywork, if it the light works then the switch is faulty. Just done the same job on the wifes Mitsubishi ........ I new something would go wrong eventually .... well it is 13 years old now  !!! Mind you WD40 in the switch and it works fine .... good old Mitsi.

Regards Pete.

Well guys if it wasn't for me being inline I'd be embarrassed, I've had this car 5 years and never noticed the interior light in the middle of the roof of the car, I only ever noticed the personal light, all is well with the interior light now

thanks for your help,

the avensis hatchbacks were prone for the interior lamp internal contacts to play up.

you can fiddle about with them if you wish too an try an sort it but i usually ended up fitting new units.

faulty door switches were pretty rare. also integration relays used to fail also causing the lamp not to work but the central locking usually stopped working also.

hope this helped you in some way.

if you pull the unit off the roof, look at the back you will notice exessive play in the switch.

repair and fix back to roof.
