As far as i'm aware all there doing is inserting a small metal plate preventing you from depressing the pedal all the way to floor, about 1/4 of an inch short so in terms of pedal feel it should be identical unless you floor the pedal.

Thanks for your input James, - you may be correct,- but the way I understand the problem is, not that the pedal stick's down in the fully depressed position but "Due to wear on the mating surfaces of the friction material" that the pedal can be Slow to Return, or Stick in any position,

I have personally experienced this condition 2/3 Months ago with a 2009 Yaris 1.33 courtesy car, that was provided by the Dealership when my Yaris was in for a Gearbox Selector Modification,

I found that on a few occasions the Accelerator Pedal was Slow to return when "Throttling Off" to change gear, - however at that time, (Pre Current Press Recall Hype) I put this down to "not being used to the feel of this new car" I only had it for a few hours.

I am still unsure what the fitting of the Metal Tablet/Shim is supposed to achieve, apparently it is not inserted under the Pedal Return Spring, as appearers in the several Video Clips that are now available online,

have you seen the latest offering from Toyota GB. =

http://blog.toyota.co.uk/video-uk-pedal-fix-how-it-works

it is presumably pushed under, and beyond, the the base of the Return Spring? to the bed of the "Friction Material"? therefore the friction materials are now Plastic rubbing on steel? - Unlikely? Confusing me Thinks.

I have reproduced below a quote from the Toyota GB Video article, Link above. =

My 2009 Auris 1.6 TR exibited this problem from day 1. I put this down to it being new and that the problem would resolve itself as parts bedded in. The pedal does hang up occasionally when the pedal is released but to my mind it is not a major problem and to date has not caused any vehicle operation problems whatsoever. It is brave of Toyota to put their hands up and admit that there is a fault. I do not believe that it will do too much damage to their image. Other manufacturers have had far more serious issues in the past which have been conveniently forgotten. (Ford Ranger to name just one) From my point of view it has not changed my loyalty to the Toyota brand at all. This is my fourth Toyota and I have converted other members of my family to the Toyota brand and their views have not changed either"

After writing the above Post I completed a bit more research on the subject from some of the USA offerings, and it looks as if I have found what appears to be the Definitive Answer to what the Toyota Recall "Fix" actually achieves, - Which is Admirably described in great detailed Pictures in this Link. =

I think this issue (and the prius brake issue) has be blown out of all proportion by the media ... I smell a rat ... can't think of many other manufacturer recalls that have attracted so much media attention, and in the case of the prius downright misleading information. Lets say have a look at the recall history of another car, oh why not have a look at the 2000 USA Ford Focus for instance .....

Recall Date:

OCT 12, 2000

Model Affected:

2000 FORD FOCUS

Summary:

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE REAR WHEEL HUB RETAINING NUTS CAN LOOSEN AND ALLOW THE LEFT REAR WHEEL AND BRAKE DRUM ASSEMBLY TO SEPARATE FROM THE VEHICLE.

Consequence:

THIS CONDITION COULD RESULT IN A VEHICLE CRASH.

Remedy:

DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE REAR WHEEL BEARINGS AND INSTALL A REAR WHEEL RETENTION CAP TO PREVENT LEFT REAR WHEEL SEPARATION. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN OCTOBER 12, 2000. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT FORD AT 1-800-392-3673.

Potential Units Affected:

203700

-----------------------------------------------------------

Recall Date:

NOV 19, 2003

Model Affected:

2000 FORD FOCUS

Summary:

ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, CONTAMINATION OF THE FILTER IN THE FUEL DELIVERY MODULE (FDM) CAN REDUCE, AND EVENTUALLY BLOCK, THE FLOW OF FUEL TO THE ENGINE.

Consequence:

THIS MAY CAUSE ENGINE HESITATION, LOSS OF POWER, SURGING, AND OTHER SIMILAR SYMPTOMS. OVER TIME, THE FILTER MAY BECOME SUFFICIENTLY BLOCKED TO CAUSE THE ENGINE TO STALL, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.

Remedy:

THIS ACTION IS DEEMED A SAFETY IMPROVEMENT CAMPAIGN AND IS NOT BEING CONDUCTED UNDER THE SAFETY ACT. ALL OWNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED OF THE PROBLEM, AND DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FDM WITH A NEW DESIGN AT NO CHARGE IF THE OWNER REPORTS THAT THE VEHICLE EXHIBITS ANY OF THE IDENTIFIED SYMPTOMS. THE FREE REPLACEMENT WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR A PERIOD OF 10 YEARS FOLLOWING THE ORIGINAL PURCHASE OF THE VEHICLE, WITH NO MILEAGE LIMIT. OWNER NOTIFICATION IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING NOVEMBER 2003. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT FORD AT 1-800-392-3673.

Potential Units Affected:

671000

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Recall Date:

AUG 11, 2000

Model Affected:

2000 FORD FOCUS

THE RESULTANT HIC(D) VALUE AT ONE TARGET LOCATION AP1, LOCATED ON THE TRIM PANEL AT THE JUNCTURE OF THE A-PILLAR AND ROOF SIDE RAIL, MAY BE GREATER THAN DESIGN INTENT.

Consequence:

IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH, AN OCCUPANT CONTACTING THAT LOCATION MAY NOT BE PROVIDED THE INTERIOR IMPACT PROTECTION INTENDED.

Remedy:

DEALERS WILL REMOVE THE LEFT AND RIGHT SIDE B-PILLAR AND A-PILLAR TRIM PANELS, REVISE THE HEADLINER EDGE NEAR THE TOPS OF THE A-PILLARS TO ACCEPT THE NEW A-PILLAR TRIM PANELS WITH THEIR ENERGY ABSORBING TUBES, AND INSTALL THE NEW A-PILLAR AND THE OLD B-PILLAR TRIM PANELS.

Potential Units Affected:

276500

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Recall Date:

NOV 06, 2002

Model Affected:

2000 FORD FOCUS

Summary:

CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH ZETEC ENGINES, LOOSE OR BROKEN ATTACHMENTS AND MISROUTED Battery CABLES COULD LEAD TO CABLE INSULATION DAMAGE.

Consequence:

THIS, IN TURN, COULD CAUSE THE Battery CABLES TO SHORT RESULTING IN HEAT DAMAGE TO THE CABLES. BESIDES HEAT DAMAGE, THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT MAY ILLUMINATE, THE VEHICLE MAY FAIL TO START, OR SMOKE, MELTING, OR FIRE COULD ALSO OCCUR.

Remedy:

DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE Battery CABLES FOR THE CONDITION OF THE CABLE INSULATION AND PROPER TIGHTENING OF THE TERMINAL ENDS. AS NECESSARY, CABLES WILL BE REROUTED, RETAINING CLIPS INSTALLED, AND DAMAGED BATTERY CABLES REPLACED. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN FEBRUARY 10, 2003. OWNERS WHO DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT FORD AT 1-866-436-7332.

Remedy:

DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE STEERING KNUCKLE PINCH BOLT FOR TIGHTNESS AND CORRECT AS NECESSARY. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN FEBRUARY 10, 2003. OWNERS WHO DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT FORD AT 1-866-436-7332.

Potential Units Affected:

446569

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Recall Date:

DEC 03, 1999

Model Affected:

2000 FORD FOCUS

Summary:

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH SPEED CONTROL. THE SPEED CONTROL CABLE END FITTING CAN ALLOW WATER TO ENTER THE SPEED CONTROL SERVO ASSEMBLY. IF THIS OCCURS, CORROSION IN THE SERVO ASSEMBLY COULD DEVELOP AND CAUSE INTERMITTENT SPEED CONTROL OPERATION OR PREVENT THE THROTTLE FROM RETURNING TO IDLE.

Consequence:

A THROTTLE THAT DOES NOT RETURN TO IDLE COULD RESULT IN UNEXPECTED ACCELERATION, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Remedy:

DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE SPEED CONTROL CABLE (WITH A NEW CABLE THAT INCORPORATES A GLASS-FILLED END CAP) AND INSPECT THE ASSEMBLY FOR INTERNAL CORROSION. SERVOS WITH EVIDENCE OF CORROSION WILL ALSO BE REPLACED. OWNERS ARE ADVISED NOT TO USE THE SPEED CONTROL UNTIL THE VEHICLES ARE REPAIRED.

A THROTTLE THAT DOES NOT RETURN TO IDLE COULD RESULT IN REDUCED VEHICLE CONTROL AND, POTENTIALLY, A VEHICLE CRASH.

Remedy:

DEALERS WILL INSPECT THESE VEHICLES AND, IF NECESSARY, REPLACE THE SPEED CONTROL CABLE.

28800

------------------------------------------------------

Recall Date:

NOV 29, 2001

IN HIGH CORROSION AREAS, WHERE SALT IS USED ON ROADWAYS IN THE WINTER, THE REAR WHEEL BEARING SEAL RACE CAN EXPERIENCE SURFACE CORROSION. IF THIS CONDITION OCCURS, THE WHEEL BEARING SEALS COULD BECOME DAMAGED AND ALLOW CONTAMINATION TO ENTER THE WHEEL BEARINGS.

Consequence:

THE WHEEL BEARINGS COULD PREMATURELY WEAR AND CAUSE A NOTICEABLE NOISE. IF NOT REPAIRED, THIS CONDITION COULD PROGRESS TO THE POINT WHERE THE WHEEL BEGINS TO WOBBLE.

Remedy:

DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE REAR WHEEL BEARINGS AT NO COST TO THE CONSUMER. ADDITIONAL BEARING SEALS WILL ALSO BE INSTALLED TO ENSURE A SMOOTH RIDE. THIS PROGRAM WILL BE IN EFFECT UNTIL DECEMBER 31, 2002, REGARDLESS OF MILEAGE. Consequence:

IF THE SEAT IS THEN RETURNED TO THE UPRIGHT POSITION WITHOUT RE-ENGAGING THE HINGE PIVOT, THE SEAT AND SEAT BELTS MAY NOT PROVIDE THE INTENDED LEVEL OF PERFORMANCE IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH.

Remedy:

DEALERS WILL INSTALL A REVISED SEAT BACK HINGE PIVOT.

Potential Units Affected:

After reading all that, i'm glad i will never own a Ford Focus! esp a 2000yr model!

I too think this Toyota recall has been totally blown out of proportion. Blame the media i suppose.

Like i said in the previous thread, if i had a new Yaris or a model of Yaris which was affected, i would still happily drive it.

Or any other Toyota for that matter. ;)

I got my recall work on the pedal done today. In all it was done in less than 45 minutes, including a visual safety report on tyres, fluids etc. I had washed it before I went in, I like to clean it myself, and they said I'd get a M&S voucher for £20. I'm not sure if that's just the dealer doing that or Toyota themselves. The pedal doesn't feel any different to be honest. I think that they were great in dealing with the problem so well, I have absolute faith in Toyota having for many years had the 'benefit' of BMW aftersales.

I was quite happy about driving it because when I had motorbikes the throttle used to stick open on them quite often. It's not as scarey as some folk make out, just use the clutch and brake and pull over. The engine will be revving like mad but that's about it. :D

Cheers

Gordie

Had mine done today whilst having a 2 year major service. Driving home I did not notice any difference at all.

Done today and it feels the same as before.

  • 2 weeks later...

I took my car in to the dealership this Morning at 08.00hrs, to have the Pedal modified, job completed 08.55hrs, (inc. a quick exterior pressure wash)

there was NO APPRECIABLE DIFFERENCE TO THE "FEEL" OF THE PEDAL upon driving the car 33 miles home (under various different driving conditions) = Top Marks
