Speedometer Problem

Recommended Posts

Hi

I've got an N reg 2.0 litre GLi with 152000 miles on the clock, which I've owned for nearly 18 months. The car is great, engine, handling and bodywork wise, but it has a couple of niggling little problems:- Firstly the oil light staying on, which looks like a simple problem to fix after reading other topics. Secondly the speedometer works intermittently, it start to register speed after I've driven over 15 - 20 miles!!!! ANY IDEAS WHAT MIGHT BE CAUSING THE PROBLEM?????

With regards to your speedo problem. Have you tried to just unplug the speedometer sensor on top of the gearbox, a small oval one with two wires.clean it, with a spray and simply reseat it again. Sometimes a residue builds up inside, dirt gets round the plug and then slight 'tracking' may occur if it has'nt been touched for a while. This would be the first thing I would try. Then it may be the sensor itself or even the actual gauge inside the dash. Hope this helps

The oil light may just be a sticky pressure switch, but not sure where it is located at the moment. Will look at the manual.
