Servicing A 1997 Carina E Leanburn Saloon

Recommended Posts

It's been a long time since I serviced my own car but times are very tight!!!! The last car I serviced was my old 1988 starlet!!! That was about 10 years ago! It was a very simple matter of changing the air filter, spark plugs, oil filter and oil. Check the tyre pressure and tyres gauge etc, and away you go.

I have never tried to service my Carina.

Like I said it's a 1997 Carina E leanburn Saloon.

Can anyone give me a run down in fairly modest terms of what needs to be done? :-)

So you want to service your Carina E or maybe it is done by now. But in any case here is some info as I think we all sould help each other.

To do a full service you need an oil filter, air filter, spark plugs (changed every 50 -60,000 miles) and of course Oil. You could also change the fuel filter if you really wanted to but normally they don't need changing unless they give trouble. So now drain open sump bung with 14 or 15 mil spanner. Drain oil and replace washer (black Cardboard like one) and retighten sump bung. Open oil filter a little and let drain a bit into the container you use to catch the old oil. Then remove and replace with new filter. As normal with oil filters try to fill or at least wet the filter element (depending on poistion it hangs). Also wet seal with new oil too. Tighten filter by hand until the seal just touches the matting surface and then tighten a further 3/4 turn as instructed too on the new filter box. top up the engine with new oil ( I like duckhams mineral oil - green) until it is at the full mark on dip stick. Run car for a few minutes turn off and check for leaks and then check level and top up again as norm. Unclip air filter box clips and replace air filter taking note of orientation of filter as you take it out. To change plugs u just use the small small spark plug socket and extension bar and rachet to losen plugs. If your plug socket does not have a rubber in it to hold the plug then you can remove them from head by using a piece of hose pipe that grips the plug if it is slightly too big but a small cable tie on it to make it smaller. Now be careful to rethread the new plugs by hand so to check you are on the right threads. then tighten using one hand on rachet holding it close to rachet head so as not to over tighten the plugs. Give a good nip on plugs with one hand. If you want to know how to best adjust back brakes or do anything else just ask.

How many miles on the odometer? It might be time to change the timingbelt. Then it is better to buy a manual, because it is too many steps to write here in the forum. For a normal service just change the oil, oilfilter, airfilter, sparkplugs (but they have long life time now), check the brakes both fluid and the pads. Most of these things are like the same as on older cars. If you managed the service the Starlet 10 years ago I am sure you manage to do the same with the CarinaE.

Don't forget to change the gearbox oil aswell as it often gets overlooked. I use a length of 1/2 inch hose pipe which fits into the filler hole nicely, with the other end attached to a small kitchen funnel. Fill it until some dibbles out of the filler hole then you know its full.

Check the anti-freeze/coolant strength i bought a tester from Halfords for a couple of quid.

Check the condition of the auxillary belts. To check the tautness of the belts apply light pressure to the middle of either belt there should be no more than a centimetre of play.
