Cold Start Issue On 57 Reg 2.2 136ps Diesel

Hi All,

Has anyone had this exact problem; car is started once the coil light has gone out but the revs bog at 500 RPM, a few seconds of this lead to the engine stalling. The next start up has the same issue, on the 3rd attempt the bogging is eventually replaced by the idle getting to the correct cold position 1200RPM ish and a small cloud of white/grey smoke. This only occurs when the its really cold like this morning -3C, it starts 1st time when the temp is a more normal 5C.

EGR has been cleaned, Car drives normally which makes me think it’s not the injectors, only obvious other issue is the heater plugs. The car is under warranty so I’m not really stressing i just want to give the dealer a place to start before they rip the whole car apart!

To me its as if the car is being suffocated because its breathing in the crap from the EGR Valve, however i'm not a Diesel Engineer

I have searched but i cant find anything with the same symptons

To add this occurs with and without mods.

Cheers

CC

Hi CC, mine is same year as yours and has a similar problem but only since a recent major engine overhaul under warranty. I have been meaning to take it back to Mr T but I thought I would give them a break what with all the recall issues! Mine had always started previously without throttle or heater plugs even when -4c just turn the key, it started first time, ran at very low revs for maybe a second then picked up the revs to 1200 rpm, now though it's as though it sometimes it doesn't get the signal from the ecu to say "Oh! it's cold so I'd better open the throttle before I cut out", and it does cut out, so I have to start it again which normally works ok.

I know 100% that there is no carbon in my engine/egr, so it's not that fault in my case, also I've not seen any smoke from mine. I think the temp sender signal to the ECU then to the throttle control has a delay in the software or .... just a simple bad connection, somewhere on them lines anyway, time will tell.

Can I suggest whoever gets to Mr T first ( it will be at least a week before I get to the dealer) reports back on here or send a PM with the explanation or fix unless someone else on the forum knows what is wrong in the mean time.

Regards Pete.

Yeah happy to feedback if i get to Mr T 1st, it will be cold again tonight so i expect the same issue to arise. Its the wifes car so she will be making the booking.

cmia

The MAF was recently cleaned and i haven't had any EML's on this car which would make me suspect the ECU isnt receiving a signal as Pete suggests.

Will be interesting this one, got till Nov to get it done FOC, whatever it is ;)

The ecu on the is200 does the exact same thing.

the is300 ecu did the same thing and a firmware flash was done.

up to you if you want to try it.

Theroy is all good, you need to experiment at somepoint.

Hello again CC, forgot to say I would think your smoke issue is just unburnt fuel after 2 previous failed attempts to start if it clears pretty quickly once it starts, remember the old days (well I do anyway, LOL) when you had to crank a diesel over for 10 seconds or so ... it started and then you disapeared in a cloud of smoke  .

The smoke doesn't really bother me, its just a lot different to my Passat which doesn't produce any at start up, that could be down to the DPF. However i think its also down to the Verso has an older technology engine.

Verso has done 47k, Passat has now done 50k.

Hi again mate, update from me ..... mine went in to Toyota a few weeks ago and the injectors were tested, the result .... absolutely spot on and they said they found nothing wrong with the car, funny thing is that it has been OK ever since so the mystery remains  but i'm happy anyway! I would have liked an answer though, keep us updated with your one.

Regards Pete.

Guys, where was the problem solved? in the Toyota center? Was it necessary to update the software in the injector control unit?
Did you change the mass air flow sensor?
Thank you!
