Rav4 Intermittant Fault. Engine Management.

Hi

I've just bought a very tidy 2002 RAV4 D4D.

On the way home the car showed the same fault as posted above on 2 occasions, both when trying to maintain a constant speed uphill, in 5th gear at about 50mph. Loss of power, engine warning light on and limp mode.

Would someone be able to give me a list of the likely causes (in order of most likely cause first etc); with approximate costs of repair by a specialist for each one, or how difficult it would be for a non-mechanically minded diy'er to do with the approximate parts costs.

I appreciate this is a big 'ask', but I'm torn between keeping/returning for a refund.

Many thanks

Best thing is to read the code first but chuck it back at the seller to fix.

Thanks Anchorman,

Agreed, I've ordered a U480 so I should know the code by the weekend.

Cheers

Hi All,

The U480 arrived but I'm getting a "Linking Error" code......

Should this work on my car? (2002 D4D)

Thanks

Hi

I am on my second 4.2, both have had this fault. Both turned out to be turbo variable vanes sticking. I removed , stripped and cleaned first turbo and never saw fault again. didn't fancy removing on second car so i just unbolted the actuator (2x10mm i think) and gave it a good old shake in and out . Been fault free for 12 months since. The fault code if i remember rightly was 1251.

Hmmm, I think your car is a bit too old for your OBD reader but it will keep for later models. You can get the code by following the instructions in this pdf (part way through).

Thanks Anchorman,

The manual test gave me error codes 34 & 78. I've looked this up and found:

34 Turbocharger Pressure signal. 78 Fuel Pump Control signal

Any thoughts on the best course of action?

Many thanks

TBH for that one I would plumb for the SCVs. They would have a knock effect on the turbo pressure. No promises but you have to start somewhere.

Many thanks for your advice Anchorman. I've ordered the SCVs and I'm planning to swap them later this week. Whilst I'm under there, I'm also intending to renew the fuel filter and clean the EGR valve.

Would you be kind enough to answer these few questions:

  • SCVs - the youtube video shows the guy lubricating the valves before inserting them - anything special or just engine oil?
  • EGR - Once cleaned out with carb cleaner, does it need to be lubricated and if so, what with. Also, is it wise to fit a new gasket?

Fingers crossed, it'll be fine once these have been done!

Thanks again.

hi i was having the same problem normally when the engine was cold,I would go to over take or just speed up and it would go into limp mode, so it seemed to be a fuel fault as i had only had the rav a couple of weeks (a 2003 NV D4D ) it was supposed to have had a recent service i got a new fuel filter and changed it the old one was filthy and had not been changed i'd say for well over a year or 2 now it runs fine.I only had this problem when the car was and not up to temperature and the diesel was a bit thicker and the crud in the filter was settled in the filter blocking it. hope this helps.
