Toyota Extended Warranty

I have the Toyota Extended warranty on my T180. Noticed an oil leak from the sump area which was checked out by local dealer (Howards Toyota) when in for 40000 service. They did the leg work, contacted the warranty people who inspected the car and agreed the repair. Apparently the book time for the job was 10 hours which was paid in full. I am glad I had the Toyota warranty - not sure if other companies would deal with such a leak

I also Have a T180 with extended warranty. At the 4 year service I was informed that the brake discs were scored and that they would need to be skimmed, however they decided that they all needed changing and replaced all the disks and brake pads under the warranty.

apologies for my mistake about RAC cover. My dealer had previously mentioned that the RAC cover was only for one year but having just read my schedule it clearly states cover until the end of the extended warranty.

Just to add : Thanks God for the warrenty!'

Had a problem with breaks, got the car into garage, and had a call that Turbo is not well - all replaced under extended warenty!

Excellent service from garage!

The only thing is that there are no cars that are reliable 100% - heard of similar problems with BMW, Volks and Fords, but they have no extended warenties to that level.

Went in to my local Listers Toyota (Lincoln) late 2009 to buy the Toyota extended warranty and book 2.2 Avensis in for 60k service.

I was advised Listers would not sell me a Toyota warranty and would only sell me their own Listers product. When I asked questions about their warranty they claimed it was the equal of Toyotas but answers to my queries seemed vague at best and sales person had to 'make calls' to answer basic questions - didn't inspire any confidence in heir product whatsoever.

Anyway a call to Toyota GB complaining I could not buy a Toyota warranty in a Toyota dealer confirmed that Listers did only offer their own product (which I thought was a strange situation). Toyota GB suggested I contact the next nearest dealer in Worksop which I did - purchased the warranty over the counter and got initial documentation.

Also as a bonus got a quote for the service significantly cheaper than Toyota Lincoln.

Seemed a lot of money at the time (2yr - unlimited mileage option) but have to say I'm now pleased I purchased the warranty - 11k later car diagnosed as requiring a set of injectors at £1600 plus labour (cough), claim forwarded to Toyota and injectors replaced with no quibbles or arguments, courtesy car supplied etc.etc.

Took out the Toyota 2 year extended warranty with Listers Cheltenham - genuine Toyota GB Warranty. Excellent service and very easy set up process. Received all documents including Toyota Club membership, breakdown cover etc. in a short space of time. Although I had the full payment funds available, £780 this could be paid over 20 months interest free, so opted for this payment option. Glad I made this choice and went with Toyota.

Old topic I know but I thought I would add current prices. I have a Corolla Verso 1.8 auto 58 reg 64k miles, the 1 year warranty for 10K or less miles per year is £510 or 2 years £750 - can be paid in installments over 10 (£51) or 20 (£37.50) months depending term. This was at Jemca Edgware Road London and all done over the phone. I only bought the car a few weeks ago, I noticed that all the servicing was done by Halfords Autocentre and not Toyota, they said it was ok as long as it was a VAT registered company and they used Toyota parts - which I hope they did!

They also said that they would give me a bit of a discount on servicing and MOT when due.

  1. Guys

The conclusion seems to be - worth getting extended warranty from Toyota* - and you can use a non Toyota dealer** provided they are VAT registered and use Toyota parts. I have a 2010 Avensis 2.0 Diesel 57k about to exit its 3 year warranty.

Anyone comments appreciated

* had an 04 Avensis - didnt miss a beat for 6 years and 80k hard miles - until the turbo blew and it cost me £3.5k

** went to a main dealer and they could not even put the covers back on the bottom of the car correctly after the service!

I just received 2 AA cards for my car after receiving the warranty documents last week. The AA membership is for 1 year not 2 years on a 2 year warranty plan - not bothered as I have AA anyway but just so you know.

NO That is not quite right. On a brand new car up to 5 years old, you can have it serviced at any garage, not just a Toyota dealer. The extended warranty is not covered by block exemption, and the terms and conditions state you must have it serviced with a Toyota dealer

T & C's

You must have your vehicle serviced and inspected by a Toyota Dealer or Service Outlet at least once a year (or more frequently for high mileage drivers) in accordance with the recommended service schedule.

Thanks Kingo - very useful

Shame about having to use a main dealer - as over the years I have learnt not to trust them (not specific to Toyota).

Think I will either leave it or go down the honest John recommend route - despite the draw backs mentioned. Would have much rather stuck with Toyota but - ho hum - the latest main dealer I've used couldnt be bothered to get back to me with a quote!

Good thing is Toyota survey after every service so I will have an opportunity to put feedback into the system.

Mentioned to them that I had to resort to you to get advice on the roof rack/roof rails.

Sorry, what exactly are you referring to, service by dealer in order to buy warranty or repair by dealer in warranty? My servicing was done by Halfords Auto Centre and as they are a VAT registered "proper" company then the extended warranty will be covered. I am pretty sure it says something similar in the terms then sent bit I will need to get it out and check again.

Sorry I thought I had been clear

You buy an extended warranty from a Toyota dealer, you MUST have your car serviced in the future by a Toyota dealer, not Halfords or anybody else, an official Toyota service outlet or dealer. "Proper" "VAT Registered" "Fred in the shed" are NOT Toyota official outlets and having your car serviced by them breaks your T & C's (Just on the extended warranty element)

Ok thanks, thought that you meant the var had to have been serviced by dealer from new. I was planning to get it serviced at the dealer anyway, I was told to request a discounted price as I purchased warranty - wait and see I guess.

Thanks guys. Useful input again.

Sounds like a difference of oppinion here. Suspect that it falls foul of competition law to have a warranty that ties a customer to another service.

Will go and check with my local dealer - and if they can be ubikd to reply will call back - dont hold your breath though they could not even answer a simple question about roof bars on a car that has been out 3 years!

For other readers this is potentially good news - the cars reputation speaks for itself so dont be put off buying one.

Kingo/tdwuk - have checked this out:

You do NOT have to have your car serviced by Toyota if you have an extended Toyota warranty. Tell the Toyota dealer telling you this to put it in writing and when they do mention the European Court Directive on Restrictive Practices and they'll probably offer you a new car if you will give them the piece of paper back.

You can have your car serviced by a local VAT registerd garage - but use genuine Toyota parts. If your local garage spots a problem that falls under warranty then they will tell you to take it Toyota for remidial work.

Sorry but that is incorrect

The EXTENDED warranty does not form part of the original warranty, it is something supplied by the manufacturer in addition, it is not an insurance backed product and it is not part of the normal warranty supplied with the car

The way it was explained to me recently was that because it is an extended warranty, and not part of the original warranty, it does not form part of block exemption and EU directives. Specifically, the terms and conditions read

Section 3, (d) Your obligations. To ensure that the Protected Vehicle is serviced by a Service centre within 30 days or 2000 miles (whichever occurs first) of each service interval specified by the manufacturer (please refer to the vehicle handbook);

Service Centre Meaning

An official Toyota retail centre or service outlet appointed by the Warranty Provider or , in the case of any Specified Territory outside the

United Kingdom, appointed by the Toyota national sales and marketing company with responsibility for that territory.

So whoever supplied that EU directive information should contact the Toyota legal department, because A They don't know what they are talking about or B Toyota don't or maybe C , none of them do

So in short, if you have an extended warranty it MUST be serviced at an official Toyota dealer or OTSO (Official Toyota Service Outlet- someone who does not sell new Toyota cars but is an official service centre)

Kingo is right. New cars within the origional warranty are coverd by the block exemption rule. The "Extended warranty" that dealers sell not just Toyota are not covered by the same rule so if they tell you it has to be serviced on the third tuesday in june once a year to keep the warranty valid you have to follow those rules.
