the 2 silver anti squeel shims that insert into the piston on the front brakes ,do they have to be positioned or pointing in any particular direction ,or do they just slot in and its not important what direction the straight edge is facing

Try using some Copperease grease on the shims.... that often cures the squeeling issue :)

i have used copper grease but i was wondering what is the sraight edge in the piston shim for does it have to be positioned or pointed or lined up with anything

The Toyota fix for squeaking front brakes (auris mostly) states to remove these piston shims :).
