We had a number of test drives yesterday on the iQ, VW Polo and Fiat 500, five drives in total. We loved the 500 and the creamy dashboard almost makes you feel like you are sitting in a cappucino! It was a toss up between the iQ and the Polo. We compromised and bought one of each. The Polo arrives in May.

The iQ was more interesting. We were looking at a new one with the 1.3 engine. The one we test drove belonged to the dealer's MD. It had an upgrade to the alloy wheels although I'm not sure if that's too bling or not. It also had the parking sensors which work really well. I also liked the satnav system. It also had the leather seat option. For some reason it also had the spoiler fitted but I can't see lack of downforce being a problem on the road. We sat down with the salesman to put together an order for ours. I somewhat cheekily asked him if the MD's car was for sale. It was registered in September last year and has 4K on the clock. He laughed but went and asked him. After a few minutes of haggling to and fro we struck a deal to take our somewhat tired Corolla Verso in part/ex. They offered £2.5K which was far better than I ever thought I'd get considering the work it needed. That was a result as I told them it was overdue its service by about three months and one of their recent inspections said the front discs needed replacing. The bodywork had it's obligatory share of supermarket trolley dents caused by inconsiderate *****s who don't take care when loading their cars.

All in all we came out of it rather pleased with ourselves. It comes with the balance of 2 1/2 years warranty and a service as well before we get it and includes the GardEx body protection and GAP insurance. So we picked up a pristine iQ 1300 with parking sensors, spoiler, wheel upgrades and satnav, all for £10K. We feel quite lucky and will get it on Saturday. The main point I'd like to make is that a good relationship with a dealer pays dividends down the line. We've always had our Corolla serviced there in the seven years we had it and they've also done all the MOTs and some minor repair work. On one occasion our ignition key partly broke when we were in France. We got back home just in time before it totally snapped. Toyota went out of their way and gave us a new key and programmed it for free.

It's a sum of many things that makes me want to stick with Toyota despite everything bad being said about them. When it came to buying the iQ, they came through just when I wanted them to. You can't put a price on that kind service. Well done, Toyota and here's to a great time of new ownership with a partly-blinged iQ.

It's a quick accelerator problem, which can be switched easily and it's only affected a very small minority.

You could get problems with any car, the only reason Toyota's issues is so big is because they've used the same part in eight model for the last 3 years.

I believe due to the bad press your going to get a great deal for the moment but with great quality service.
