Satnav Route Calculation.

Does anyone have the iq satnav fitted? I'd like to ask something.

I'm familiar with my tomtom 740 which lets me select the fastest or shortest route. Yesterday, we came back via a road we know very well and which my tomtom and garmin nuvi both correctly route using the shortest route option. When I entered the same postcode on the iq it wanted to take me via a route that was hopelessly inefficient and out of the way. Eventually, I found the screen that lets you select the route options and I deselected the motorway option. I had none of the other preferences selected. By that time, we were actually on the only main road linking A to B so unless it decided to do a u-turn and come back on itself by half the distance again it did follow the right main road home.

That got me thinking: if I deselect all of the options in the preferences screen, does that actually translate into "shortest route" or would it try to do something "unique" which my tomtom and nuvi do correctly?

I think the iq satnav seems to be comprehensive but I'm not sure about the routing preferences. My wife will probably use the iq more than me and as a community nurse, she often needs to go to new patient addresses. With the tomtom and garmin you can also select "pedestrian" mode which effectively does a nice job of routing well around streets, excluding the occasional footpath which you obviously cannot take a car on! Then again, the iq is small enough to try it...

In some respects I think the iq system has great potential but I'm trying to see if I there is an equivalent for the same functionality I'm use to on my other devices. I have to admit, I love the split screen the iq satnav can be switched to use.

Is this satnav proprietry to Toyota or did they source it from another company. Reason I ask is that there might be a forum somewhere where I can target my satnav questions as I know not everyone here will have one and hence I might not have access to a wider audience.
