Hi,

After doing journeys of what I would think would be long enough for the engine to heat up the idle speed seems to too fast. Is there anything I could check for this. e.g. 40 minutes motorway driving at 70mph the other night, when I got home the the engine was still doing 1200 - 1300 revs.

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Hi,

Couple of simple things to check first - nothing silly like the air con being left on which will raise the revs ?

Check the thottle cable is free to move - where it comes out of the outer cable, in the engine bay, a few strands of the cable can break, these then catch on the outer cable parts and prevent the cable from returning fully - so keeping the revs up - had 2 cables go like that over the years.

Check the pipes in to your rocker cover. I seem to remember one wasn't all the way in on mine and it revved too high.

You don't say what the temp gauge shows, is the coolant actually warming up sufficiently? or is the temp gauge still showing cool? could be as simple as a new thermostat required.

How fast does it idle when cold? If it's the same the IAC could be stuck. If it's even faster it could be termostat or vacuum leak. Except from that, if you have the 2.0 petrol, the idle can be adjusted. Probebly also can be with the other engines.
