T180 Spare Tyre Question

Looking to get a spare tyre for my T180 (as some of you know lol) Been in touch with this company who have offered a wheel, but its slightly smaller than the existing wheels. Will this be ok?? I thought it may confuse the differential?? See e mail from them below

If you use our 16x7 Delta wheel, fitted with a 225/70/16 Sigma Stampede tyre, it works out at 28.4" tall, which is 0.8% different to your existing..........which would give you a speedo reading of 60.5 mph at 60 miles an hour, if fitted to all four corners.

This is the closest I have got to a match on a cheaper wheel, the combination of which would cost you £144.52 including vat, fitting / balancing and delivery.

As I read it they are telling you it would ok to fit 4 wheels this size.

Under NO circumstances should you fit 1 of those wheels along with 3 of your standard wheels

Personally I would not touch them, if you can't get correct size aftermarket, wait till some come up on e-bay.

thanks for that. i thought it seemed a little odd. Its only for a spare though but still i feel it will be better, as you say, to get one the same size as the others.

I have pm'd you on this but I don't know what to say. To be sure yes it should be the same but then CRVs have a spacesaver that is miles different. Maybe they have been Type Approved and have a known performance under the specified speed limitations.

My worry would be your legal position if you got stopped or had an accident.

As they say on blind date - "its up to you"!!!

I am sorry but I am struggling with this topic, I can understand Dave + now Anchs wishing to carry a spare on their xtrs, But Wardude you have a T180 already fitted with get you home tyres, I can understand your concerns but surely until such time as you copy SYWY + replace all 4 runflats completely then you really should be looking for a spare T180 wheel + Tyre  I really don't think a 0.8% difference in size is relevant, that can only be the difference between a new + partworn tyre or one with a couple of pounds difference in pressure, But surely if i understand the function of the T180 runflats correctly they transmit an error code to the OBC, if you put on a non std wheel even temporarily your OBC will be getting a reading from 3 tyres + not the 4th so will effectively think you have a wheel missing.. I really think you should wait till your tyres need replacing + seek out a permanent solution then.. But hey thats just my opinion..Stew

Hi matey

trouble I have is that my nearest fitting centre for these tyres is 50 miles away. Even then they have to order one in for me. I need my car every day for work and cant take the chance of having a puncture and only being able to drive approx 100 miles at reduced speed. Also if you drive with a run flat punctured you will almost certainly damage the steel ring adding a further £100 to your already high bill. At least carrying a good spare tyre will allow me to change the wheel and continue driving and then maybe the next day or when I get time from work, I can drive the car down to get the tyre replaced. A warning light on the dash I can live with as I know the tyres are ok. Does that make sense now lol.

OR... my original plan is that when my RFTs need changing (they are virtually new at present) im gonna cut the steel band off and put normal tyres on, however ill still need a spare tyre in the boot

Dont even mention what ill do if I get 2 punctures at the same time lol

all best

Shaun

Think its a confidence thing Stew, not having a spare made me feel uncomfortable.I dont have much faith in the repair kit.

Re the wheel/tyre he was offered, you are right 0.8% difference aint a big difference, but when some sales chappy is trying

to sell you a smaller wheel (T180 is 18" I think) and making up the difference with a higher profile tyre alarm bells would be

ringing with me. How is that going to effect the handling etc ? Could be dangerous and defo not worth risking life and a hot

T180 IMHO.

Hi matey

That's why I bought a couple of spare wheels. Off in the west coast of Scotland, 50 miles to any tyre supplier (nevermind BSR RFTs) is questionable. And from some reports, you could use up a good chunk of your 50 miles before the TPMS goes off anyway. There's where your tyre/ wheel/ support ring/ pressure sensor damage hits you in the pocket.

Anyway, Saturday 6th March, I get to test drive the new Kia Sorento KX-3 around a 4x4 offroading track :D . I'll do a T180 v KX-3 comparison later. And my Toyota dealer has been in touch about the new RAVs, so might get a go in one too. But probably not offroad :(

Exactly matey. Peace of mind is a nice thing to have. We are off to west coast of Scotland in July funnily enough. My Old Focus ST had a spacesaver wheel and it was no more than a bike tyre. if thats good enough to use on a high performance car like that then im sure the wheel and tyre combo I have been offered for a spare will do the job nicely...hope so anyway lol

I keep a rav 17 inch wheel in my garage and take it on long trips also for peace of mind .

But when i got a punture 10 miles from home when i only had the car for 3 weeks or so , i phone my dad to bring me the spare as the noise coming from the flat was terrible ( sounded like the tyre had come off totally ) Still drove normal though !!

I had to bump up a kerb with the tyre totally flat and never damaged the support ring , and the garage what the tyre got sent to said its very difficult to damage the support ring enough to have to replace that too , so they must be pretty strong .

All in all though the BSR tyre may have saved me going in a ditch because there was a big slit in it when i checked . I left the spare on for nearly a week until i had time to put the orignal wheel back on . The local tyre company sent the wheel off and had it back the same day . Like Stew said the light on the dash stayed on until it detected the original wheel .

Mick  Maybe we should start a spare wheel sharing scheme :D

If you are concerned that your dealer would take some days to get a new tyre why not buy a spare tyre and you keep it in stock at home - I would think that the mileage at 50 mph could be greatly increased if the speed was kept to say 30/35 to get you to the dealer - sfter all for those who live in towns they have to drive at that speed all day - thanks goodness I live near the country side.

I bought my T180 spare wheel/tyre on eBay, absolutely brand new, still had the label on the tread - was originally bought by someone as a spare and never used !!! That might tell you something.

Best wishes

Guy
