T180 Driving Styles To Increase Fuel Economy

Since buying my T180 12 months ago, I`ve been following the comments of many owners who are struggling with their fuel economy with this car. There are several methods/aids you can use that I have found really make a difference:-

- Keep your fuel ecomnomy display on Momentary at all times so you can get a really good indication of your mpg at that time (mine is quite accurate)

- Keep tank to tank fuel economy readings

- Keep your tyre pressures up and dont carry unnecessary weight in your car/boot

- Anticipate situations so you dont have to physically stop as much

- Personally, I always use Millers Diesel Sport 4 (and the new stuff out)

- Keep the engine at the very lower end of its power band to get the best fuel economy only 1900rpm

- Change up gear towards the middle of the power band around 2400rpm

- Dont over rev the car, is this why we are seeing several people with blown head gaskets ? No point in reving a diesel engine too high

- With these Euro IV engines, keep the EGV valve in good condition by varying your driving, I dont think these engines are best suited to pottering

around town, they need a good motoway or A road run every now and then to make sure the automatic EGR cleaning process works at its best

I usually get late 40`s to early 50`s mpg on a motorway run when using cruise control and 6th gear (65-70mph), I get mid 30`s travelling very slowly to work depending on the outside temperature and number of stop/strarts (average 19 mph). Getting circa 44mpg easily with mixed A road/motorway driving.

Only my thoughts, findings after owning an Avensis D4-D T180 DCAT for 12 months

PS. I really like the car
