we've just swapped the wife's Mazda TS2 (dreadful car) for an 06 Celica from RMB teesside. It's got the 12 months toyota warranty, but I hknow that some things are not covered (eg a battery). I have a Lexus also from RMB, and of course if you take the car back in the first week or two with a problem with something that isn't covered, they are very good about fixing it. So the question is what things should we look at in the first couple of weeks

Thanks

Mike

Hi Mike & welcome to TOC.

You should have received two Remote Keys and one Grey Valet Key with the car. The Remote Keys are very expensive to replace from Toyota, so if you only have one...

I would be checking the condition of the Brake Discs, especially the inside faces for corrosion. Mine only lasted 6000 miles as the steel is more like cheese.

As an 06 car will be the face lift model, there are no inherent faults with the Engine (unlike the earlier cars) I'm pleased to say.

Hope you can get some pics. up soon.

Enjoy :)

SA that's useful. I've got a friendly ex Lexus mechanic who could check those out for us. We pick it up on Monday (a metallic blue one with full leather, cimate control, and sunroof, but oddly not described as a Premium when we bought it). I'll put some pics up while it's nice - RMB always do a good job of prep. Are the two remote keys identical? 'cos with the Lexus one is more intelligent than the other.

The remote keys are the same.

But yes really, there's hardly anything you need to check on these. My 03 plate has been absolutely faultless, requiring only routine servicing. The only faults I've encountered are the usual noisy auxiliary belt tensioner which squeaks when cold and my anti roll bar drop links are now rattling at the ball joints. I have a set to fit as soon as I get round to it though. Oh and the boot struts that hold it open were shot so also needed to be replaced under warranty. They struggle with the spoiler on the boot lid.

Over and above those, make sure it doesn't mist up too quickly inside as they are prone to the odd leak from the boot depending on how well the spoiler was fitted and keep a close eye on your oil and other levels as you should with any car you're new to really.

Happy driving! Oh and, you will probably find that they're not the most refined of cars suffering from a fair bit of road noise - but it's quite normal and nothing wrong.

She had a celica from new in 1986/7 and loved it. Must admit in some ways it was amazing. It was left in the garage for 2 years and started about 3rd crank. Later it was left for 5 years and I was going to get it towed away. Another Celica owner said he'd get rid of it for us, and brought a trailer to remove it. But he jump started it, put some air in the tyres, jerked it back and forth a few times to release to seized on brakes, then drove it away.

In other ways it was not so good - it was prone to rust - not so much the bodywork as the chassis. And the wheels were hopeless. Corrosion used to force the tyres off the rim and she was always having to top them up. The suspension on this new one seems to be more compliant (less thumpy) than I remember the old one. But yes you are right we both noticed the road noise.

Oh yeah the air con fluid used to leak away at least once a season. Never had a problem with the boot lid struts, but will check them on this one. RMB had to replace mine on the old Lexus I just bought.

thanks again

Mike
