2002 D4D Running Problem

Hi.

I have recently bought a 2002 Avensis 2.0D4D with 108,000 on the clock and (apparently) full toyota service history. It ran ok for the first week. Then the engine management light came on and it started to struggle when I was accelerating, it seems gutless, and won't reach over 65mph on the motorway until the engine is really warmed up (which is taking around 30 minutes at the moment). When the problem does clear, the acceleration is great. And the problem does not kick in again for the rest of the journey.

I've been reading the posts on the 2.0D4D problems and I tried cleaning the EGR valve using a specific product for the job, and also using an injector cleaner. I fill up mainly with Shell diesel and rarely have to use supermarket fuel. Now it is also not starting first time, and it doesn't seem to have to be freezing temperatures for this to happen.

Any ideas on what it could be? I've thought about replacing the fuel filter and glow plugs next as I don't have a code reader and don't know if it would be able to be used on my car, that's if I could source one for a pre-2004 diesel. :(

Any help would be appreciated.

Rebecca

Rebecca,

on a cold morning does the car struggle to start ?

Yes, it takes 2 or 3 attempts. At the moment I'm making sure all my fans and stereo are off when I start it, getting up earlier for work and just living with the problem, but it concerns me more when it struggles to start at 4.30pm and it's not really cold.

Your problem maybe be related to the SCV.

How good are you with the mechanics side on working on a car ?

I'll have a go at simple things, I've usually got supervisory eyes in the form of a mechanic brother (it's just catching him when he's home!) I've bought a fuel filter and was going to put it on today but the avensis simply wouldn't start this morning, so I couldn't even drive it from Manchester to my parents. On the 3rd attempt it sounded like the Battery was losing charge so I stopped trying. Hopefully a friend is going to get his breakdown service out to it tomorrow morning.

What is involved in replacing the SCV?

Has the EGR actually been removed and inspected? Whats the specific tool for the job mentioned in the original post? Really need to get the code read, hopefully it will be something cheap to fix like the EGR/Fuel Filter and not the injectors or turbo.

Yes I took the EGR valve off and used Wynns EGR cleaner (a specific product not tool, wasn't sure whether it was ok to mention brand names).

Yesterday and last night it actually ran ok, I thought maybe the build-up in the EGR had eventually cleared but then this morning it was a no-goer.

It's going to have to have some attention this week, maybe the AA guy will shed some more light on it tomorrow.

Thanks for your replies, I'll let you know how I get on.

The older 1st gen D4D engine didnt really suffer from injector or turbo issues,

Its main problems were

MAF,

EGR

SCV

EGR - is mechanical - no electronic side

SCV - Fuel Pump Controls.

Rebecca,

Excessive cranking can make the Battery go flat. and cause wear on the starter motor, if it dont start with 3 cranks then it wont start no matter how many times u turn the key.

I doubt AA people can fix the issue you are experiancing.

Your issue sounds like SCV.

Rebecca, what you need to do is.

Tools needed,

Small Hammer,

socket Set

1 - Open the bonnent

2 - remove the Radiator expansion tank, undoo the 2 10mm bolts, (you do not need to take pipes off) just tip and move to side.

3 - Looking straight through the hole, you will see TWO connectors

4 - One will be a Red colour the other the Green.

5 - These are the control Valves for the fuel pump

6 - now put the key in the ignition, and turn to acc

7 - Back to the engine bay, you need to use the small hammer and "tap" the ends of the control valves. DO NOT HIT WITH FORCE

8 - go back to the key and turn to ON, (do not attempt to start) ON is where the dash board lights will turn on and listen for a "tick noise" leave for 20 secs and turn ignition off

9 - go back to the engine bay and tap the control valves again

10 - back to the key turn to ON, let lights turn on and wait for the tick noise again, turn ignotion off.

11 - Now turn key back to ON, wait for all lights to turn on and START the car.

it should start..

post back with results.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi,

By the time I read this post I'd replaced the glow plugs and still had problems, so needing something reliable to go to the lakes in, borrowed my Dads Passat and left the Avensis with him for a week. My brother replaced the fuel filter and reported that the car was running absolutely fine.

Unconvinced I asked him to take it to Toyota anyway, as I had lost all faith in the car. The nice people at Toyota did a free diagnostic and vehicle safety inspection (I was quoted £50.00 over the phone). The diagnostic revealed no fault codes, so maybe the fuel filter was the problem after all. I have the car back now and it's running great.

Thank you for all your advice though, it's really appreciated.
