Help Needed With Starting Problem 2.2 D4D Avensis

Need some advice please ,,, i have an 06 avenssis 2.2 d4d and from a cold start the car wont start unless i keep my foot on the accelerater and turn the car over a little more than usual ,,,, glow plugs have been changed also changed the filter and filter head ,,, cleaned the fuel lines and i also changed the starter as the old one burnt out due to excessive use trying to get the car started in the mornings ,,,, when the engine is hot it starts normaly and during the day works fine ,,, also there is no running problems and no loss of power ,,, does anyone have an idea what else it could be or have they encountered similar problems to mine ???? i dont go on the internet much so ill leave my mobile number 07851783858 and if you call ill ring you staright back ,,, also could kingo the parts man contact me please id be intrested in getting my parts from him and also would be keen to pick your brains on this problem thanks jay

Did they check the Battery? Maybe the charge is low, especially in cold weather. When was the Battery last changed? Has it ever been changed?

If the Battery and glow-plug systems are working as they should a duff engine coolant temp sensor could cause similar problems. If faulty the ECU may think the engine is always hot and not allow extra fuel to be injected during a cold start. The ECU not only adjust the amount of fuel but aslo injection timing.

If you have access to a multimetr it may be worth checking the resistance values of the sensor once when cold and then when warm. Having said that poor electrical connections at the sensor can give similar problems.:)

Our 2.2 was acting up with cold starting, (broken record time now :lol: ) cleaning the EGR has sorted the problem. As cold starts recirculate the emissions (via the EGR) the problem doesn't show on warm starts becuase the EGR isn't activated. Has this been checked? Whats the mileage on the car?

theres 110k on the car ,, taxi man so i knock the mikles up rightly ,,,,thanks igor for calling me reaaly appreciate it ,, checked the cyaniddes they are fine and there is no airlock in the fuel lines as you suggested ,, where are them sensors located ????and i havent checked the egr but will maybe try that later

OK no air lock has been found -- it is better now -- we remove this link from the chain.

PLease revert with SCV test result.

Don't overlook the simple solutions as OldskoO1 suggested, with a weak Battery or starter motor the cranking speed is affected. A diesel needs a good cranking speed to produce the heat in the cylinders to fire the fuel (a diesel is a compression ignition engine). Even with good glow plugs a slow cranking speed will affect it's cold starting performance.

its a new Battery and a new starter motor in also changed the glow plugs 3 weeks ago ,, maybe will investigate the scvs and maybe clean out the egr valve will keep you posted

Just to make sure:

SCV are in the fuel pump? Take them out clean them put them back in?

MAF sensor is the little tear drop thing in the air box?

Where is the temperature sensor located?

Mine is also having starting problems, cleaned EGR valve, changed fuel filter and new Battery still happens, sometimes where the car doesn't start at all, sounds like it wants to start then doesn't even with accelerator pressed this is mostly cold but once happened when engine was hot at normal temp had to crank engine 5 times. When it does start white smoke out of the exhaust looks like all the unburnt fuel. Car has done 86,000 but still have to check all glow plugs. Most of the time car starts fine. The car doesn't seem underpowered and has good torque and power from 2,000 to 4,000 RPM. Can you use carb clearer on the MAF and EGR valve? (Seeing its a diesel)

HI, all!

Got exactly the same problem on my Toyota avensis d4d 2007. It wont start in the mornings after over night stay. Yesterday was +10 when I tried to start it. Took me 4 tries till it stared and smoke comes out of exhaust. In winter mouth it was a really hard job but now its a problem in summer too. Took car to diesel specialist no faults found, they guessing it might be SCV valve or faulty injector. No lost in power at all, starts and drives perfect. Cleaned ERG valve,MAF, Throttle body, changed glow plugs,fuel filter, charged and checked the Battery, used diesel system cleaner still no luck.. I am a cab driver so car done 145 k at the moment. Please any help resolving this issue would be appreciated.

Hi everyone, my 05 2.2 D4D wont start on cold morning, cleaned EGR, got Starter refurbished, new Battery, was going to purchase coolant sensor and New MAF sensor too. any ideas, people have told me its injectors but i havent go them checked yet.

Has similar issue recently, including the cloud of smoke when it fianlly started. Ended up I had a failing injector, when it finally failed it actually "popped" out ans sprayed oil all over the block. I knew when it had finally failed as the car lost most of its power. Replaced the injector and starts on forst turn of the key as it used to.

Yeah mine is smoky too, i have changed the MAF sensor no difference, putting in Coolant temp sensor to nite, - how did you check the injector @Alpha12??

It failed in the end and popped out of the block as I say ****** oil everywhere.

I think to check it you would need to remove it. The garage sent it off to be checked and advised it was not repairable. 220 quid plus VAT for 1 injector and about 2 hours labour to replace. Back to smooth staring and driving now though.

I seem to have this issue. So I had starting problems few months ago and was advised to change the glow plugs improved for a week or so then back to same, was then advised to change the Battery did that again similar issue ok for a week then got worse; this time it was hard to start but also hesitation in acceleration under 1800 RPM. Was now advised to clean the EGR did this and it made the starting better but still hesitation in revving and lumpy below 1800 rpm with black smoke. Was now advised to change the MAF sensor so i did this and it got perfectly fine but the starting was still an issue. It started with hesitation and cranking up quite a bit, then few days ago it wouldn't start at all. Was now advised this is the Starter Motor so just got round to changing this and all of a sudden now i have very lumpy ride intermittently as if something is stuck and the car wants to cut out also white smoke however after few minutes of driving its fine. But when the car is switched off and you try to start its an issue with it starting after a few cranks but again very lumpy drive although engine is hot. Weirdly the starter which was changed 2 days ago is completely gone now no cranking but just a weird fan sound. Will get the starter replaced as is still under warranty but i have no idea what to do. Already spent hundreds in space of couple of months. The car is a 2006 d4d 2.2 Avensis with genuine 97,000 and by the way had a full service including fuel filter 7,000 miles ago. Either the mechanics i am going to are not getting the correct fault or its time to scrap it. I really do like the car but cant afford to keep on throwing money on it. Need some serious help. PLEASE

So got it checked out and it was an injector, got all injectors cleaned and one fixed, got them all into the car last nite, car was going well, this morning was nice and cold, perfect test, car started first time :) but left it ticking over for ten mins, then went to get it a rev and the engine stopped suddenly and is really slow to turn over. :( :( i think this could be the end of her.

What a nightmare, is it not running at all now? I didn't do the work myself so can't really comment on what may have gone wrong, the garage told me they cleaned the three of mine and replaced one so sounds identical to yours minus the fact that mine actually jumped out of its housing when it failed. I remember they mentioned about the copper washers at the base of the injectors being crucial but they re-used mine as they were all fine.

Seems a shame to give up on it after spending money but I guess only you now if its worth spending more on it.
