Temperature Gauge Not Working?

Recommended Posts

Posted

Hi all,

1993 Carina E 2.0 3S-FE. Today the temperature gauge stopped working, its on the bottom. Any suggestion what it can be? How can i check if the gauge itself is broken or if it is the temperature sensor? (Is the sensor the green thing with two wires connected to it?)

The engine temperature seem to be as normal when driving, but the gauge is showing cold.

Thanks

If you're getting heat through the heater I'd say it's the sensor. If you aren't then it's the thermostat.

That was an easy answer. I liked it. There are not any things like that in Haynes or in Toyota's manuals. They mention lot of meassure the resistance in the sensors etc...

There could be another option is it ONLY the temp guage that is not working. It could be a fuse if other guages is not working.

A simple test for the gauge itself is to disconnect the sensor lead.(think it only has one wire).Turn ignition light on. Then earth the sensor lead. If the gauge does'nt fully deflect then it is broken. If it does deflect and hot water is running through the tube where the sensor screws in, it is most likely that the sensor has packed in. Thermostats dont usually pack in altogether but will show fluctuations on the gauge.

Hope this helps

hi mate

the working principle is based on bimetal ohmnedance dependance on the themperature surrounding it.

You might to have two issues: either poor contact with wires or damaged bimetal insert. try to investigate the first + thoroughly clean contacts.

Cheers/Igor
