Can I Bypass The Egr Valve Or Make A Blanking Plate?

Having recently seen the amount of carbon deposited in the EGR and extending into the engine of my car, i realise that this soot build up will only eventually suffocate the system - clogged wastegate & turbo, i have even seen a pair of heads with carbon/soot in the valves!!

Having looked on LandRover forums, i see that some people have created simple tin gaskets that block of the EGR (not sure whether completely or just from one port), thus stopping all the "muck" going back into the engine.

Is this possible with the D4D engine?

Thanks

James

Yes you can block off the EGR valuve,

Hoever i think the MIL light will appear.

The new avensis D4D engine EGR has two sides

Mechanical and Electronic.

You can try, did you take and pictures of the EGR ?

Hi CMIA,

Unfortunately i didn't get any pictures. The part had an upper to it that looked like the electronics, the lower bit had two holes in the face of it, with the mechanical bit inside.

Surely one of these is inlet and the other outlet? If only i could find a workshop manual i could work it out :crybaby:

I will try to research it a bit more before i risk it.

James

P.s Thanks CMIA for replying to my posts, it's seems you are the only other person posting on here

Yes one is an outlet and the other is the inlet.

BOTH holes need to be blocked.

The outlet will be the mainfold side.

I like to help, where I can.

Isn't it better to just clean the valve every 6mths rather than running around with the MIL or Pollution Control light on?

Keeping off the cheap Diesel should slow the build up as well.

I'm quite happy to keep cleaning the EGR, but judging by the amount of threads on this forum identifying where the carbon has spread inside the engine and turbo itself - particularly the wastegate - i was thinking prevention is better than constant problems and ultimately a clogged engine.

I will see what happens regarding the MIL light - if the car keep going into limp mode there will obviously be no point.

did it keep going into limp mode?

surely this problem can be mapped out on the ecu

To jtrunks.

I'm not being funny, but your reason for blanking off the EGR valve is to lower the build up carbon. It's not going to happen, it's an internal combustion engine & it will over time build up carbon deposits no matter what you do. If your a mechanic then you know the valve is used to re-circulate small amounts of burnt mixture to lower your emission level's. Keep removing it & cleaning it.

On older car's, using the A'series engine as an example, you could have the head off and be half way through a full de-coke before you removed all the ancillories just to access the cylinder head on a D4D. I pulled the head off my own car last year during my summer break & it took me two full day's to complete job. It's a pain in the hole, you will never stop carbon build up.

If carbon build up concern's you following reading other forum's, do a full de/coke.

Regards, Beagh.

Hi beagh did you get any pics of the inlet manifold while you had the head in bits? Im curious to see what the insides of it look like as ive only seen the hole where the Egr valve bolts on (while ive have the egr off for cleaning) and fancy seeing that hole and surrounds from the other side.

To caveman_si,

The inlet manifold is like an oversized toblerone bar with one face missing, the open face bolts straight to the cylinder head. It's not tubular in design like you would imagine most inlet manifolds to be. Sorry, no photograph's. I had most of the part's vapour blasted with a very very fine medium by a lad who used to work for British Airways. He's on the Bath Road behind the big hotel's by perimeter fence, if i can find his business card, i'll post his details. If your intent on carrying out the job, book a couple of days of work. Or Google vapour blasting for your local area.

Regards, Beagh.

Only after two weeks my EGR is again blocked so I must assume that the tank is polluted and I will have to have the fuel tank cleaned and the pipework too.I do not believe fitting a blanking plate is a permanent solution as the MOT test will be failed.

according to a chap who makes a replacement for egr valves it will not effect MOT nor will removing the catelyst(not requiered to be fitted anyway).the egr is a cheap way to reduce the exhaust emissions that the manufactureres

have fitted. theirs no provision for cleaning it on annual services . this is a problem thats of their own making and they are going to have to find a replacement for this system, as peope are going to go off diesel.

some people can do their own cleaning but others cant. and they get robbed when asking their garaage to do it.

it would not be too bad if toyota diesels were economic, but they are not compared to a lot of others,

i brought my first diesel car back in 1986 (VW JETTA) and diesel fuel was 18 pence cheaper than petrol a gallon.

and of course fuel was a lot cheaper thn anyway.

i was doing about 12000 a year then but only 40000 now so ive gone back to petrol as its just not worth the problems

(egr etc).

serving on diesels is a lot dearer than the petrol.at my age i cant crawl around under cars as i could.

and i dont trust anyone with serving my cars, but age catches up on us all.
