U can either get replacement H4 bulbs or a xenon HID conversion kit... Kits are expensive but you get full xenon lights on dipped and full beams.

Just make sure the kit you get is capable of working on a negative switched system.

I had true HID/Xenons in my Aygo that didn't support this at first,

so I only had dipped beams and even that was with a lot of fiddling...

The second set was polarity-independent, but it had so

much scatter that I finally removed that set too...

My stock lights are alot whiter and brighter than most people's lights.

I get flashed when I'm on 0 dipped by a few drivers.

Need to set it to - to shut em up, or keep flashing them yourself. :)

I've put a xenon dipped beam on my bike and it makes a massive difference at night. I've not looked at doing the car because I'm worried about the attention they will get from the cops. The aftermarket kits are still technically 'not legal' for use in the UK without a lot of other changes to the lights, like washers and self levelling. You have a chance to get away with it on a bike because most people are used to bike lights going up/down and flashing due to acceleration etc and as long as you aren't purposly blinding people the cops will probably leave you alone.

I got my kit from Hids4u, they were helpful and the quality of the kits was good. They do H4 kits http://www.hids4u.co.uk/h4-xenon-hid-conversion-kits-c-15.html I would go for the slimline kit myself because the ballast is a lot smaller than the standard and a lot easier to hide.

Wiring up the kits is very simple, the hardest bit is locating the ballast somewhere and getting to the back of the bulbs.

If you get a HID-kit with 4300K lighttemperature you can hardly tell it's not Halogen by color.

So if you set them correctly the chances of the cops pulling you aver are very slim IMHO.

Don't know about the MOT though...

It's not strictly legal, as there needs to be auto-self-levelling built into the lights, and pop-out high pressure jet-washing of the grime on the headlights, and the headlight shells need to be designed for discharge bulbs. If you can get these from some european-spec version of the car you will be safe from an MoT tester or Plod from telling you to remove the kit, or you may get a fixed penalty in addition.

People who will chance it, use the lower-wattage 35 watt outfit, with white light of 4300 degrees kelvin colour temperature. Even the 6000 deg kelvin colour is slightly blue, but if it was on a BMW PC Plod would not bother, as there are legal Beemers with HID's, and some Ford Focus variants, etc.

Your headlight bulbs are H4 type, dual filament, or HI/LO, as they are often known, as described W.R.T. solenoid-operated discharge-bulb H4 kits, as you can find on HIDS4U website, for example. This is a reliable company, with good history and advanced products. They claim to have developed a glare-free version of the H4 HI/LO type conversion kit, but careful setting-up on an MoT standard lamp checking unit will be essential.

One thing you lose, is the ability to "FLASH" your headlights, unless the dip is already on. The "STARTER BALLAST UNITS" take a little time to fire-up the bulbs, but some claim to be faster than others. Some cars need a "CANBUS COMPATIBLE" version of the kit to avoid bringing-up odd dashboard alarms, but these are available. (you can reverse the conversion temporarily for the MoT, but my car needs the headlamps to be removed to change the bulbs;-- I have a kit, but I am thinking of selling it, as I have legal PIAA 60/55 bulbs putting out 110/100Watts of light.)
