Quick Question About Fuel And Accelerating....

Hiya

I was wondering if anyone can give me a bit of advice on the Auris......

I know this topic is bound to have been covered before so please forgive lol...

Anyway I took delivery of a new Auris on 1st march and i must say i am very impressed so far lol, anyway i was wondering if anyone knows roughly what happens with the fuel consupmtion of a new car.

It is a 1.6 petrol and i am finding at the minute i am getting 28-30mpg which seems very low for a car which i was told by dealer is reaosnable with fuel ecomony(i just went from a 2 litre petrol which used 25 mpg).

A friend who has owned Toyota's for years says it is common and will take time for the engine to settle, but another guy who knows about new cars said the engine doesn't need to bed and the fuel consumption is high for a 1.6( it is 133bhp)....

The car has been driven around the town but also i would say half of driving has been M1, and A-roads and even with high speeds and using the new 6 speed gear box it is still averaging 29mpg on the computer......

I would appreciate anyone in the know to give me a bit of advice lol.

Also does anyone notice when accelerating off from stop in first gear there is a delay to the thrust of the car? Is this normal for an Auris or just a new car in general or it is part of the eco-drive Toyota has implemented in their cars? (although my Auris does not have stop and start technology in it). I just wondered as i noticed it doesnt' wheel spin etc at traffic lights as the thurst just isn't there(not that i do wheel spin on purpose lol but the 2 litre i couldn't bleeding stop from wheel spinning).

As you can gather this is my first new car and also my first Toyota lol

Thanks for looking :yahoo:

It depends on your driving style but 25-30 mpg is quite low. I have 1.6 VVT-i and can get 35 mpg with no problem- I have quite heavy foot :). It takes some time for engine to settle in so wait and see how it goes.

My average from 33000 km is 37 mpg. Inside the city i get 30-33 mpg.

If i had 6 gears it would be better about 3mpg i think.

Didn't saw any change when it was new and now.

So i think you should have better mpg in your car :)

Town driving can really make the MPG suffer. I would expect low 30's for exclusive town driving. I was averaging 47mpg in the 1.33 on a run so I expect the 1.6 to hit low 40s and high.30s for mixed average.

New engines don't need much bedding in. All I would advise is don't redline or accelerate hard from cold or for the first 4-600 miles. Gradually increase the revs from an upper limit of 4k to start with over 1000 miles. Vary the acceleration speed too mix it up and try not to stick to the same rpm for too long. Give it a right belt up to red line after 600 miles but do it gradually as your upper revs go from 4 to 5 to 6k etc. Say every 100 miles or so.

As for economy. These new petrols work well at low rpm, for economy. Use the change shift lights but aim for around 2k to cruise at. Accelerate quite hard between 3 and 4.5k rpm to get up to speed and then get into a gear to keep you around 2k. I'm sure your MPG will improve then.

If it has an eco mode put it in neutral so it shuts off the engine.

Hiya

Thanks for the replies...

My partner was driving the car today and he tried doing 30 in 6th gear he said the car went fine and was under 2000 revs and he said fuel on computer jumped up to 35mpg......so taking that and what you have all said in consideration i guess driving in a high gear and not putting your foot down too harshly when accelarating should help keep the mpg down a bit.

We tend to do a lot more town type driving so i guess fuel wise the car is going to be slightly more economical than the 2 litre was, on saying that we as drivers do thrash the car around a bit with accelerating so our driving style probably isn't helping too much lol
