Reading The Water Expansion Tank Correctly?

Hi

Can someone please shed some light on my Dads 1.4 SR expansion tank.

expansiontank.jpgfulllowmarkb.jpg

As you can see from the pic the water goes up one channel and is really low else where. In the manual, and on the underside of the bonnet, it shows a tank with Hi and Low in its respective positions above one another and a normal fluid level. I.E. Straight across the entire tank.

Why doest it looks like this? Is this normal?

Why is the FULL and LOW mark the same mark?

What does that 'E' mean?

Just that my Auris acts like a normal Expansion tank. Easy to read straight line.......

The car was bought back in January so if need be i'll get him to take it back to the Dealers to straighten out.

Kind Regards

I am guessing that on the line is ok, under is a little low so keep it at the line. the 'E' may just be th water Exit or Enrty point. There must be space for water to expand into so dont fill it up but it also needs to be able to use the fluid in the tank from time to time.

If you look very closely, the "Full" mark is the bond between the upper and lower half of the expansion tank.

The "Low" mark is clearly visible.

The cooling fluid is not "used", at least if all is OK.

If the fluid level gradually sinks below the "Low" mark, it means that there is a leak in the system.

Could be either a hose, a sealing or, worst case, the cylinder head gasket is starting to fail.

In the order of repair costs, that means "$", "$$" and "$$$$$$$". :(

are you sure it doesnt say 'B' where you have 'E'?

alot of toyota bottles have LOW, FULL and B (which means BLEED)

this is the level you fill it after emptying the coolant for a change.

and when running the engine upto temp, the level will drop to around the FULL/MAX mark.

Mart.

A closer look and a little contrast in Photoshop and hey presto a B

Thanks for that.

Thanks to all for the info. I will top it up to the join point of the resevoir tank and leave be. I'll keep an eye on it and see if drops.
