Jingling Sound From Engine

Hi i have a 2002 avensis d4d with 160k on the clock. Recently it has started making a jingling noise or a sweet rattle(best words to describe it!) from the engine. It happens more when accelerating but is also there when idle. It sounds like its coming from the drivers side of the engine. Its not smokey has no loss of power and starts first time every time. It affects the car in no way only that the noise is irratating! I have been told that it may be a bearing in the alternator, is this likely?

Any help greatly appreciated...thanks

Car serviced every 10k without fail, last timing belt fitted at 120k. Yea the car drives fine just the noise coming from the engine. Noticed today actually the noise was a bit louder when idling and seemed to be creating a little vibration in the car itself. It nearly felt as if the idle speed was altering up and down very slightly although there was no movement on the rev counter. It is a strange noise i never heard before and would like to find the source before it stops the car as its a taxi!!

Thanks

Its more like a tingling sound, higher pitched than a humming noise. Oil an oil filter every 10k, air filter after 20k and fuel filter after 30k. When the timing belt was changed it was the belt only no tensioner kit or anything like that(not sure if these engines need this). Just a work colleague suggested it could be the bearings inside the altenator. The starter gave a bit of trouble about 6 months ago but semmed to correct itself. Thanks

Possibly A/C pulley bearings starting to go, does the noise dissapear if you put the A/C on?

the belt is to be changed along with tensioner -- may be this is the reason of its worn down.

A/C On or off makes no difference the noise is still there.

Dual mass flywheel,

the Aircon cluth can case the same issue

Rang Mr T there. They say that as a rule the tensioner doesnt give bother and usually doesnt need changed with a timing belt. They think it is a belt problem of some kind. Told me to remove each belt to see if the noise disappears. There first thought was a power steering belt. Looks like its going to be a hard one to pin point...thanks

the noise cant really be made elsewhere.

Why dont you undo the ps and alternator belt and see if it noise goes away.

Does the noise become more apparent when driving near a wall / building ?

I too had a "jingling" sound, and it turned out to be the split pin on the end of the driveshafts happily moving around - they have done this for the last 7 years and 70k, so I assume its ok. (Split pin easily seen if you pull off wheel cover , its right in front of you in centre of wheel).

Hope this helps

This noise would only occur if the car was moving...

the way I understood the car was stood still.

Must try and look for this. Was it on just one side of the car? and did you replace the split pin? thanks

The noise is there when the car is still but its quiet compared to when the car is moving. And yes the noise is louder near buildings but i guess thats just the noise being amplified by the echo near the buildings.

Finally found the problem. I replaced the fan belt and discovered it was in very bad condition and no more noise...great!! Thank you all for your replies with this...thatch
