Hi i have encountered a problem with my 2.0 d4d avensis verso over christmas the turbo fell to bits all the fins broke off it. it took ages to get one looked for a second hand one but had to get a new one from toyota at a

cost of €2800.76. fitted it and all was good untill thursday when a whisteling noise started after 20 miles it stopped and the car lossed power only reving up as far as 3000 rpm. i have removed the pipe for alook the turbo will not spin. would this be a faulty unit or would the engin have caused it to seize.if so what would cause it how do i find out and fix it.any info would be a help as i dont want to blow another €3000.

I assume the wastegate is not blocked or locked it will be a faulty unit.

Engine wouldnt cause the fins to stop.

take it back to toyota. and tell them its faulty.

hi mate

ok there are two possible issues giving the same outcome with T/C: as follows:

- turbocharger as normal unit is lubricated by flow oil normally drained thru calibrated orifice. In case this oil supply hole is partly blocked due to carbon deposits -- this leads to violating of turbocharger cooling by the same oil and has an effect of "snow ball" as the less flow the more carbon etc leading to overheating + bearings blocking;

- carbon deposits have accumulated as "snow ball" inside resulting shaft rotation blocking.

I'd recomend to have turbo dismantled and investigated its gas flow side. The overhaul kits are available on sale as normal and may be it is cheaper to use it to overhaul yr turbocharger.

Good Luck/Igor

Was the oil flow and return oilways checked before the turbo was fitted and was it primed before engine start-up.

It wouldn't be reasonable for anyone selling a turbo to replace it without knowing its cause of failure especially if they didn't fit it.

Even if you could get a reconditioning kit the turbo would still need to be dynamically balanced using specialised equipment.

Your best option would be either to have the existing turbo properly refurbished or get a reconditioned unit on an exchange basis.

There are a number of online suppliers who may be able to assist - see links below for a sample few.
