High Fuel Consumption 2.2 Diesel

Hi gents. Just recently I've purchased 2005 avensis 2.2 diesel. Everything appears to be fine apart from the fact that driving around London I can't get over 25 mpg. My previous car was a vauxhall astra, so I dont really know what to expect. I know that driving technique matters but not that much. I'm reading other posts and other owners get like 33-40 mpg. I wonder if anyone knows what the problem may be.

Current milage is 94000 miles, it appears hat the last service was done at 80000. Going through the paperwork I've found that all injectors ware replaced at 65000 at toyota service. I also noticed that temperature gauge is fluctuating. It's at normal temperature when I'm driving, but when i stop say at traffic lights it jumps up. After few seconds it drops down. When I bought the car I've topped water up in the radiator. 2.5 l was missing. I don't know what the capacity of cooling system is but 2.5 l seems like a lot. Would you say that it may be problem with injectors? I hear they're expensive to replace.

Just another thing I've noticed, when I shift up rpm don't seem to fall when clutch pressed. This gives that unpleasant kick when I let the clutch go. As I said, my previous car was an Astra and it didn't happen then. I'm quite annoyed with this purchase now as I also discovered that the rain sensor don't work as well.

wouldnt think it would be the injectors as you say they were changed by toyota at 65k thats less than 30k since they were changed but i stand

corrected i would be more concerned about the coolant loss and the fluctuating temp guage dont want to scare the s... out of you but as you

may have read on hear these engines are prone to head gasket failure, as for the rain censors i wouldnt worry about them i havent got them but

ive heard they never work properly anyway.

Update. I've noticed foam in the radiator when engine running. There's air escaping when radiator cap opened. Looks like head gasket. I've gone through the paperwork and found that head gasket was replaced 8000 miles ago by toyota. Is it possible that it's gone again and how can you tell if its not the head thats damaged. Changed from Vauxhall looking for reliability...

ive never personally had head gasket failure with any of my cars (touch wood) so carnt really speak from experience but i think the symptoms

are obviously loss of coolant, white smoke from exhaust, and if you pull out your dipstick you may see a white/creamy substance im sure other

good people on hear will be able to advise try to look on the bright side could be something totally different good luck

 Head gasket failure will inevitably cause poor fuel consumption and whilst Toyota may have replaced the head gasket, the previous overheating may have warped the head and this may not have been checked. I think the cylinder head on this model is aluminium and is more likely to have been distorted during the original occurance. Sorry but coolant loss, mayonnaise type faom deposits on the filler cap coupled with fluctuationg temperature are all signs of head gasket failure.

Maciek_t. I've just being reviewing previous posts on the forum and its looks like others have suffered the same issue and managed to convince Toyota to repair the car FOC under an extended warranty (100K). Have a look through the forum for 2.2d overheating as a search clue and you should get some more information.

Trust this helps and best of luck.

Hi. I have a 2.0 D4D which round town gives 45 mpg minimum and on a motorway run anything between 54 and 65 depending on how it's driven.

I know it's not exactly the same engine but may give you some comparison (would expect the 2.2 to be a little less economical but definitely NOT THAT MUCH!)

I do find that "branded" diesel instead of supermarket stuff often gives significantly better MPG, although apparently they all come from the same sources. I do know other people who swear this is true too. Hope this helps.
