Air Conditioning Temperature From Vents

I had an accident on black ice about 4 weeks ago and the front of my car was badly damaged due to hitting a roadside sign post. The amount of the repair to the insurance company was £3200. Damage included radiator a condensing unit for the air conditioning.

After getting the car back, everything seamed to be OK except when I switched the A/C on with all the relevant knobs in the correct positions to produce cold air at the dashboard vents the temperature didn't change from the outside temperature 10deg C.

I have tried to find out from 3 local Toyota Dealerships if they know what the temperature should be at the vents with the fan blower set to maximum, and they haven't got a clue and worse, they are not interested. I checked the temperature with a normal tube thermometer to see if the temperature changed or not.

Hi

I have just been though a few air-con problems with the wife's car so maybe I can help.

Firstly air-con can be difficult to diagnose by vent temps at outside temps around or under 10C

Certainly older RAVs the 4.2 models have a sight glass in the air-con circuit that allows you to see if there is coolant circulating.

But honestly if you have just had the car repaired it should come with a "repair warranty", you could wait till it gets a bit warmer and the problem is obvious then take it back to the repairer.

If it were me I would give them a call now saying you are not sure its working can they check it out, its their responsibility to ensure they repaired the car correctly. They should be able to determine if its leaked any gas in a few minutes by hooking it up to a pressure gauge.

hi mate

you ve damaged an important art of an A/C system, as condenser resulting refriigerant leak. So now your system is out of order. This system hast to be repaired + leaks investigating to be performed. The most probably the condenser or its joining tubes got damaged and need to be chaned on new one. It's understood the system hast to be de-gased + re-gased again. Cheers/Igor

Hi Polly,

Welcome to the club. Sorry to hear of your accident.

If you have had an insurance repair you should have been returned to the same position you were in before the accident so it is up to the insurer to ensure that is the case. If you suspect that the AC is not working as it was before the accident you need to get back to the insurer and have them sort it with the repairer. If the repairer is not an AC specialist then they should seek the services of one on your behalf to check/re-gas and prove the system.

Can't help with the temp at vent but doubtless someone will.

Hope you get sorted soon
